Android banking malware is a real and growing threat, but the latest figures count different things: security-product alerts, malicious installation packages, financial transactions, and people estimated to be at risk. A Trojan may disguise itself as an everyday utility, then imitate a bank sign-in screen or misuse Android permissions to help criminals steal financial information. Pause at unexpected banking prompts, suspicious app requests, or a screen that will not respond, and verify through a trusted channel.
What the latest figures say—and what they count
Several security organizations reported increases in Android banking-trojan activity, but their figures are not interchangeable. They do not add up to a confirmed global count of infected people.

The Q2 2026 package count means the trend should not be described as uninterrupted growth. These organizations also use different methods and measure different outcomes; their statistics should not be combined into a single infection rate.
How banking trojans can take over a financial-app session
A banking Trojan is malicious software that can interfere with phone use or a financial-app session. Some Android campaigns disguise malware as a file manager, PDF reader, phone cleaner, or browser. An app may initially appear harmless and later activate harmful functions through hidden updates.

- Fake sign-in overlays: Malware can place a deceptive login screen over a real banking app, making a fake prompt look like part of the bank’s app.
- Concealed activity: A Trojan may show a false “busy” or waiting screen while fraudulent activity takes place.
- Misused Accessibility access: Excessive Android Accessibility permissions can give malware ways to interact with the device or interfere with the user’s control of it.
- Obstructed exit or restart: Some campaigns try to make it harder to leave a screen or restart the phone.
Malicious apps may arrive through messaging apps or harmful webpages, and an unexpected browser installation or update prompt can be part of the lure. Official app stores reduce some risks but do not eliminate them. Kaspersky describes common delivery routes and cautions that official stores are not completely risk-free in its 2025 overview of mobile banking Trojans.
Warning signs that call for a pause
- Your bank session unexpectedly asks you to sign in or reauthenticate again. Do not enter credentials until you have verified the prompt independently.
- A banking screen becomes unresponsive or displays a “busy” or waiting message that seems unusual.
- A generic utility app requests permissions that do not fit its purpose, especially Android Accessibility access.
- A browser installation or update prompt appears unexpectedly, particularly after following a message link or webpage.
- Your phone seems to resist your attempts to exit an app or restart it.
One warning sign does not by itself prove that a phone is infected. Stop interacting with a suspicious prompt and contact the bank using a trusted route, such as the number on your card or the bank’s official website—not contact details supplied by the questionable screen or message.

Steps that reduce risk and help if something seems wrong
- Pause before installing. Avoid app links in unexpected messages or webpages. Choose trusted download sources, then check the app’s developer details and ratings before installing. Ratings alone are not proof that an app is safe.
- Check whether a permission makes sense. Think carefully before granting high-risk access such as Accessibility. If an app’s request does not fit its function, deny it and verify the app through a trusted source.
- Keep your phone and apps updated. Install operating-system and app updates through their normal, trusted update paths rather than an unsolicited browser prompt.
- Respond to a suspicious banking session safely. Do not enter credentials into an unexpected reauthentication screen or keep interacting with an unresponsive one. Use a trusted channel to contact your bank and ask it to check for suspicious activity.
- Report suspicious apps or transactions promptly. Contact the bank immediately if you suspect malware or notice activity you did not authorize. Follow the bank’s guidance for securing your account and disputing transactions.
- Consider reputable security software as one layer. A security product may help detect or block malicious activity, but it cannot guarantee safety or replace contacting the bank. The cited sources do not establish a comparative test that identifies one best product.
These precautions lower exposure but none guarantees that a phone or account will remain safe. UK Finance’s Principal of Economic Crime, Dianne Doodnath, urged customers to “stay alert to all threats of fraud,” including criminals who trick people into downloading malware that may put personal and financial information at risk. Zimperium’s 2026 report announcement attributes that statement to Doodnath.
