Google’s Android Auto redesign adds customizable, glanceable widgets, a refreshed Material 3 Expressive interface and edge-to-edge Google Maps. New 3D navigation views highlight road details such as lanes and traffic lights. Google says the updates will reach cars throughout 2026, but it has not published a vehicle-by-vehicle schedule. These features are designed to make information easier to see while driving; Google has not cited evidence that the redesign reduces distraction or crashes.
What changed in the Android Auto redesign?
Google announced the refresh on May 12, 2026. The changes focus on the interface, widgets and navigation display—not a separately announced replacement for Android Auto.
Material 3 Expressive styling
The update brings Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language from phones to car displays, with expressive fonts, smooth animations and wallpapers. Google says the interface is designed to adapt to a range of screen shapes, including ultrawide and circular displays. That description is not a list of confirmed compatible vehicles or screens. Google’s announcement describes the redesign.
Widgets that remain visible during navigation
Drivers will be able to add widgets such as favorite contacts, a garage-door shortcut and a weather overview. Google says widgets can remain visible at a glance while navigation is active. Which widgets and configurations are available may depend on the vehicle and display; Google’s announcement does not specify availability for every car.

Edge-to-edge Maps and Immersive Navigation
Google Maps will extend across the display, while a feature Google calls Immersive Navigation adds a 3D view of buildings, overpasses and terrain. The display can also highlight lanes, traffic lights and stop signs. Google says these visual cues are intended to help with challenging turns and merges. Google describes the Maps changes as part of the refresh.
Does the redesign make multitasking safer?
Google frames the changes around making information glanceable and navigation easier to follow. Its Android for Cars product leader, Guemmy Kim, wrote that Google’s mission is “to make every journey more seamless, safe and connected.” That is a statement of intent, not a reported safety result.

Google’s announcement does not provide a safety study, distraction measurements, crash data or an independent evaluation of the redesigned interface. The widgets and richer map cues may make selected information more visible, but the available evidence does not establish that using them makes driving safer. Drivers should continue to prioritize the road and follow local laws on device use.
When will the redesign reach your car?
Google says the updates will come to cars throughout 2026. It has not given dates by automaker, vehicle model, display type or market, so the announcement cannot confirm when a particular car will receive each feature. Check Google or your automaker for vehicle-specific availability as rollout details emerge.

Google reported more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars in 2026. That is Google’s figure, not an independently audited count. The same announcement separately refers to Google built-in being available in more than 100 models from 16 brands; Google built-in is a different product category, not a count of Android Auto-compatible cars.

Google’s announcement does not say that drivers need to buy a cable, wireless adapter, phone mount or new head unit to get the redesign. It also does not provide enough compatibility detail to determine which existing setups will receive every feature. Avoid buying accessories on the assumption that they are required for this software refresh; verify requirements with Google or your vehicle manufacturer.

How Gemini fits in
Google also discussed Gemini assistance in Android Auto, but Gemini is a separate feature from the interface and Maps redesign. Google says Gemini can provide hands-free assistance, with features varying by subscription, country and connected-app setup.
