For a more reliable Android Auto connection, first confirm that your phone and car support the connection mode you’re using. For wireless setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on while pairing. For a wired connection, use a high-quality USB data cable connected directly to the car, then check that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system.

Check compatibility before changing settings

A USB port in a car does not by itself mean the car supports Android Auto. Both the phone and the car or stereo must be compatible with the connection mode you want to use. Google’s Android Auto requirements list the phone and vehicle requirements; Google recommends contacting the phone manufacturer about phone-specific support and the vehicle manufacturer about car compatibility.

Google lists Android 9.0 (Pie) or later and an active data plan for wired Android Auto, along with a compatible car and high-quality USB cable. Wireless projection requires a compatible Android phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. Android Auto is not available on devices running Android (Go edition). Requirements and vehicle compatibility can vary, so check the current Google guidance and your vehicle maker’s information.

Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones for use with a car display; you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app for that purpose.

For wireless Android Auto, keep the setup radios on

Wireless Android Auto requires a vehicle or stereo that supports wireless projection. With the car parked and its infotainment system on, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled while completing setup. Google Android Auto Help says: “For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.” The first wireless connection pairs the phone and car over Bluetooth.

  1. Confirm that both the phone and the vehicle support wireless Android Auto.
  2. Park the car and turn on its infotainment system.
  3. On the phone, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
  4. Follow the vehicle’s pairing prompts and complete the initial Bluetooth pairing.

If setup still fails, check compatibility and the vehicle’s instructions rather than changing unrelated phone settings. Google’s setup guidance directs drivers to their vehicle manufacturer for model-specific help.

AAWireless Two – Wireless Android Auto Adapter – Convert Factory Wired Android Auto to Wireless – Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Auto Connect – Easy Plug & Play – Multifunction Button – Made in Europe
  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
  • Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
  • Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed

For a wired connection, check the cable and car settings

Start with a compatible car and a high-quality USB data cable connected directly to the car’s USB port. A cable that charges a phone is not necessarily suitable for data. Google recommends trying a high-quality cable shorter than one metre during troubleshooting and advises against USB hubs and extensions. If a cable that previously worked has stopped working, Google says replacing it is likely to fix the issue. Try the cable supplied with the phone first, if available.

  • Connect the phone directly to the car’s USB port.
  • Try a high-quality cable under one metre long.
  • Remove any hub or extension from the connection.
  • If the connection used to work but no longer does, try another suitable cable.

These are troubleshooting recommendations, not a quantified guarantee of improved reliability.

Check the car’s infotainment settings and make sure Android Auto is enabled. If it is enabled but the connection still fails, restart the infotainment system and try again. The exact menu labels vary by vehicle. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s website for firmware updates and model-specific instructions.

Google’s Android Auto setup help covers general setup and compatibility checks; the vehicle or receiver maker is the better source for car-specific settings.

If Android Auto fails when connecting to a second car

If the issue began when you tried to connect to another vehicle, Google recommends clearing the list of previously connected cars and setting up the connection again. Its documented phone path is Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Previously connected cars. Menu wording can differ between phones and Android versions.

  1. Unplug the phone from the car.
  2. On the phone, open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Previously connected cars.
  3. Choose Forget all cars.
  4. Reconnect to the vehicle and complete setup again.

Use this reset when the problem involves switching vehicles; it is not the first check for every cable or pairing problem. See Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance for other connection issues.
