An experimental MSU-1 feature proposal for the Analogue Pocket’s SNES core was closed after maintainer agg23 objected to what he described as an unsolicited, nearly 50,000-line, completely LLM-built diff containing extensive unrelated changes. The exchange is about one submission and one maintainer’s review expectations—not evidence of a blanket ban on AI-assisted code.
What was proposed for the Analogue Pocket SNES core?
On October 5, 2026, GitHub contributor nasonliu opened pull request #123 in the agg23/openfpga-SNES repository. Titled “Experimental MSU-1 streaming and standard-memory profiles,” it proposed experimental MSU-1 streaming from SD storage for the Pocket SNES core. The pull request is marked closed, and its description identifies the work as a draft source contribution, not a release.
The Analogue Pocket is a handheld that runs community-developed FPGA cores; in this case, the proposal concerned the SNES core maintained by agg23. The change was not an update released to Pocket owners.
Why did maintainer agg23 object to the pull request?
In a comment on the pull request, agg23 said the contribution was unrequested and too large to review in its submitted form. He characterized it as a “nearly 50k line diff,” called it “completely LLM built,” and said it included substantial unrelated material. Those are the maintainer’s assessments; the available record does not establish an independent audit of the line count or authorship.

His objection also focused on where the changes landed. He said the contribution touched much of the upstream HDL, which he said already had MSU-1 support, and questioned why the submission included documentation and Python changes. In other words, the feature idea did not resolve his concerns about the scope and relevance of the implementation or the effort needed to review it.
“This kind of behavior is not acceptable. You are infringing on the time and brainpower of people by pushing ‘your’ content that little/no of your brainpower went into; completely unrequested.”

He also acknowledged the idea’s appeal, writing, “If it works, that’s pretty cool,” before concluding, “It has no place in my world.” His remarks address this submission and his expectations for work sent to him; they do not set out a project-wide policy on AI tools.

What is MSU-1 streaming?
MSU-1 is an enhancement standard used in SNES emulation and ROM-hack projects. It can support features such as streamed, CD-quality audio, but it was not a chip installed in the original Super Nintendo hardware. The proposal’s stated aim was to stream MSU-1 content from the Pocket’s SD storage through the SNES core.
The pull request description also included contributor-reported notes about hardware feedback and areas not accepted or validated. Those notes are not independent certification, and they do not establish broad game compatibility.

Was the feature merged or released?
No. GitHub lists pull request #123 as closed, and its description says it is a draft contribution rather than a release. The available record does not show that the proposed implementation became part of a released Pocket SNES core.

The exchange is a specific disagreement about a proposed implementation, its size, its claimed authorship, its relevance to the existing code, and the work required to review it. It does not establish that AI-assisted contributions are universally rejected by emulator developers or that the proposed feature could not be implemented successfully in another form.

For maintainers, a useful contribution must be reviewable as well as potentially functional. The issues agg23 raised point to practical questions contributors can address before submitting code:
- Was the work requested or discussed with the maintainer first?
- Can the proposed changes be kept focused on the feature rather than mixing in unrelated files or rewrites?
- Can the contributor explain the implementation, its interaction with existing support, and the evidence behind any hardware or compatibility claims?
- Is the change small and documented enough for a maintainer to assess?
These are considerations reflected in this exchange, not a formal checklist or published AI policy for the repository.
