To interface an ADC with a microcontroller, connect and configure both sides of the measurement: the analog input, reference, supply and ground must suit the signal, and the digital link must match the ADC’s protocol, timing and data format. First decide whether the microcontroller’s built-in ADC is sufficient; use an external converter when you need capabilities it does not provide.

Built-in ADC or external ADC?

A microcontroller’s integrated ADC is often the simplest choice if its available analog channels, input range, resolution, conversion rate and reference options meet the measurement requirements. It avoids wiring and programming a separate digital interface, but integration alone does not guarantee better accuracy or speed.

Check the microcontroller datasheet for analog-capable pins, input limits, conversion timing, acquisition behavior, reference options and pin conflicts. Performance varies by device: Microchip documents up to 12-bit resolution and 1 MSPS for the SAM L10/L11 ADC, figures specific to that family rather than a general MCU specification. Microchip SAM L10/L11 ADC documentation

Choose an external ADC when you need more channels, a different input topology or range, greater throughput, simultaneous sampling, or another capability unavailable from the built-in peripheral. An external converter adds analog design requirements and a digital connection that the host must be able to operate at the required rate.

Define the measurement before choosing the interface

Write down what the ADC must measure and how the result will be used. These requirements narrow the choice of converter and prevent a nominal bit count from standing in for a full specification.

  • Signal: minimum and maximum voltage, single-ended or differential connection, bandwidth and source impedance.
  • Channels: how many signals are needed, and whether they may be sampled one after another or must be measured simultaneously.
  • Sampling: required sample rate, conversion latency and the host’s capacity to transfer each result.
  • Electrical compatibility: permitted input range, supply voltage, logic levels and reference options.
  • Measurement quality: accuracy and noise specifications, not just nominal resolution.

Keep the input within the chosen device’s operating limits. Attenuation, buffering or level shifting may be needed, but their design depends on the actual ADC datasheet and signal.

How to connect an ADC to a microcontroller

Think of the connection as two linked paths. The analog path carries the signal to be measured and establishes its reference and return path. The digital path carries commands and conversion results between the ADC and host. A correct digital transaction cannot compensate for an out-of-range input, an unsuitable reference or a signal that has not settled before sampling.

1. Check the analog input and reference

Use the exact device datasheet to determine the permitted input range and topology. Do not assume that an ADC accepts any voltage from ground to its supply, or that a differential input permits arbitrary common-mode voltage. Reference and supply choices determine the conversion scale; a changing or noisy reference can affect the reported code.

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the input network, reference connection and decoupling. Source impedance and external filtering matter because the input must settle during the ADC’s acquisition interval. The MCP3201 datasheet, for example, discusses the time needed for its sample capacitor to settle. The ADC121S101 is an example of a device that uses its supply voltage as its reference and calls attention to SPI noise, showing how supply, reference and digital activity can interact.

2. Wire and configure the digital interface

For an external converter, identify the exact pins, logic-voltage limits, clock requirements, command framing and result format in its datasheet. SPI and I²C are common host interfaces, but their details differ by part. Verify that the microcontroller can communicate at the required bus rate and complete transactions quickly enough for the desired sampling rate.

Do not connect a 5 V host signal to a lower-voltage ADC input unless the part explicitly permits it. Check operating conditions and absolute maximum ratings; use suitable level translation when required.

3. Read and validate conversion results

Implement the part’s specified transaction sequence, including channel selection, conversion timing and data alignment. Interpret the returned code according to the device’s output format, which may include sign or offset conventions. Start with a stable, known input, then check several points across the intended range against the datasheet’s transfer function and error specifications.

SPI or I²C ADC: which should you use?

SPI typically requires clock, chip-select and data signaling; the exact arrangement, mode and framing are device-specific. I²C uses a shared bus and can reduce wiring, but bus traffic and the converter’s maximum rate constrain how much data the system can move. Neither protocol determines analog accuracy by itself.

Example converter Interface and channels Resolution and rate What the example illustrates
Microchip MCP3002 SPI; 2 channels 10-bit; up to 200 kSPS A compact, two-channel SPI SAR ADC. The rate is a device-specific vendor specification. Microchip MCP3002 product documentation
Texas Instruments TLA2528 I²C; 8 channels 12-bit; up to 140 ksps An I²C example with more channels; confirm address, commands and bus bandwidth in its datasheet. The rate is a device-specific vendor specification. TI TLA2528 product documentation
Analog Devices AD7367 SPI-compatible options; dual simultaneous sampling 14-bit; up to 1 MSPS throughput A dual simultaneous-sampling SAR example for applications where sampling alignment matters. The throughput is device-specific. Analog Devices AD7367 product documentation
Analog Devices AD9613 LVDS data outputs; SPI-compatible setup/control 12-bit; up to 250 MSPS A high-speed converter class with a different capture burden from a typical MCU SPI ADC. The maximum is device-specific. Analog Devices AD9613 product documentation

These examples are not interchangeable alternatives. Compare input range and topology, channel count, multiplexed versus simultaneous sampling, accuracy and noise, acquisition and conversion timing, reference and supply requirements, logic levels, interface burden, package and software support. A higher resolution number alone does not establish that a converter is a better fit.

Why the bus clock is not the whole sampling story

An ADC must acquire the input and complete a conversion before the host can retrieve a valid result. A fast serial clock does not make an analog source settle faster. If the source impedance is high or a filter capacitor is large, the input may not reach the required level during the acquisition period, producing an incorrect reading. Use the data sheet’s acquisition guidance and the actual signal-source characteristics when selecting or designing the input network.

For high-speed acquisition, the output path may be parallel or LVDS rather than a simple MCU-friendly serial link. The AD9613, for example, has LVDS outputs and SPI-compatible control; its stated 250 MSPS maximum is specific to that product. Such converters require a suitable FPGA, processor or capture board capable of handling the data path.

Bring-up checklist for reliable readings

  1. Confirm power and reference: measure supply, reference and ground at the ADC, and check that they meet the datasheet’s operating conditions.
  2. Apply a known input: begin with a stable voltage safely inside the allowed input range, not at an absolute limit.
  3. Verify the digital transaction: check protocol mode, address or chip select, command sequence, channel selection and timing.
  4. Check the returned code: confirm bit order, alignment and signed or offset interpretation against the datasheet.
  5. Test across the range: compare readings at multiple input points with the expected transfer function and specified error limits.
  6. Investigate noise: compare readings with the host bus quiet and active. Variation may point to supply, reference, grounding, layout or digital-coupling problems.

For each candidate part, use its current datasheet as the implementation authority; vendor product-page figures are specific to the named devices and may depend on operating conditions.
