American Express was not hacked directly. A third-party merchant processor used by numerous merchants experienced unauthorized access, and a Massachusetts customer notice said some current or previously issued Amex card details may have been exposed. The notice did not identify the processor, the number of affected people, or the incident’s full geographic reach.
Was American Express hacked?
No. The customer notice filed with Massachusetts regulators said American Express-owned or controlled systems were not compromised. In a March 6, 2024 report, an Amex spokesperson said the incident occurred at a merchant processor and was not an attack on American Express or an American Express service provider.
The notice described unauthorized access at a service provider engaged by numerous merchants. That wording means the exposure occurred in another company’s environment, where payment information from multiple merchants may have been handled. It does not establish that every Amex customer was affected.
What Amex information may have been exposed?
The notice said the following information connected with current or previously issued American Express cards may have been compromised:

The available notice and contemporary reporting did not say that Social Security numbers, passwords, or other identity information were involved. Do not assume those categories were exposed based on this incident alone.

What should I do if I’m an Amex cardholder?

Inspect recent transactions
Review posted and pending activity in the official American Express app or website. Look for purchases, cash advances, or other activity you do not recognize.

Turn on transaction alerts
Enable instant notifications for suspicious or unusual activity using your Amex account’s current alert settings. Labels and menu locations can change, so follow the options shown in the official app or website.

Confirm your contact information
Make sure the phone number, email address, and other contact details on the account are current so Amex can reach you about account activity.

Contact American Express if something is suspicious
Use the contact route displayed after signing in to an official Amex channel, or the number on the back of your card. Explain the transaction and follow Amex’s instructions for investigation or account protection.

Contemporary reporting said Amex was monitoring potentially impacted accounts and that customers were not liable for fraudulent charges. Verify the current terms and dispute process directly with American Express, because support channels and policies can change.

The available notice identifies possible exposure of payment-card details, not Social Security numbers or passwords. It does not establish that every cardholder needs a replacement card, a credit freeze, paid identity monitoring, or a security device. If your account shows suspicious activity, ask Amex whether it recommends replacing the card or taking another account-specific step. A credit freeze or broader identity-theft response may be appropriate only when your circumstances or a separate notice indicate that identity information was exposed.

What merchants should know
American Express’s general merchant security guidance discusses PCI DSS obligations and asks merchants to report a payment-data incident to Amex within 72 hours. Those are merchant responsibilities; they are not extra procedures that individual cardholders must complete for this incident.
