AMD said U.S. export controls on its Instinct MI308 data-center GPUs led to approximately $800 million in inventory and related charges. Those charges help explain why record sales and an operating loss appeared in the same quarter.
What AMD reported for Q2 2025
AMD announced its second-quarter results on August 5, 2025. The company reported $7.685 billion in revenue, which it described as a quarterly record. Its other headline figures show why revenue alone does not describe the quarter’s profitability.
| Q2 2025 measure | AMD-reported result |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $7.685 billion; record quarterly revenue |
| GAAP gross margin | 40% |
| Non-GAAP gross margin | 43% |
| GAAP operating income (loss) | $(134) million |
| Net income | $872 million |
| Diluted GAAP earnings per share | $0.54 |
All figures in the table are AMD’s reported Q2 2025 results; the gross-margin figures use different accounting bases and should not be treated as interchangeable. See AMD’s Q2 2025 financial results.
How the MI308 export controls affected the quarter
AMD attributed approximately $800 million in Q2 inventory and related charges to U.S. Government export controls on its Instinct MI308 data-center GPU products. The figure is a quarter-specific charge reported by AMD, not an estimate of lost revenue or a measure of the restrictions’ total long-term cost. AMD’s release identifies the MI308 products and the controls as the basis for the charge: Q2 2025 results and charge disclosure.

Why record revenue coincided with an operating loss
Revenue measures sales, while operating income reflects the costs and charges recorded against the business’s operations. The export-control-related inventory and other charges weighed on Q2 results. AMD’s 40% GAAP gross margin includes the quarter’s reported charge; the company also reported a 43% non-GAAP gross margin. The differing margins illustrate why accounting basis matters when comparing results, but neither margin should be confused with operating profit.
AMD nevertheless reported $872 million in net income and $0.54 in diluted GAAP earnings per share. Net income is a separate measure from operating income, so positive net income does not negate the reported operating loss.

How to interpret the later full-year charge
In its annual filing dated March 28, 2026, AMD described approximately $440 million in net inventory and related charges for full-year 2025 due to the restrictions. That full-year net figure is not the same measure or period as the approximately $800 million of Q2 charges. The filing also says the controls prevented shipment without a license of certain Instinct integrated circuits and certain Versal FPGAs to China, or to certain customers outside the United States whose ultimate parent was headquartered in a D5 country. This scope does not mean that every AMD product or every shipment to China was prohibited. See AMD’s 2025 annual filing with the SEC.

AMD’s Q2 2026 results, announced August 4, 2026, reported revenue of $11.536 billion and net income of $2.297 billion. The release’s comparison identifies Q2 2025 revenue as $7.685 billion and the approximately $800 million charge associated with the MI308 export controls. That later comparison makes clear that the record-revenue headline in this article refers to Q2 2025, not AMD’s current results. See AMD’s Q2 2026 financial results.
