AMD announced its 6th Gen EPYC processors in July 2026, including the EPYC 9006X family aimed at cache-heavy technical workloads. AMD says 9006X X-series models offer up to 1,152 MB of L3 cache and up to three times the L3 cache per core of comparable 9006 SP7 parts. That makes them especially relevant to some simulations, modeling and analytics—not a guarantee of faster results for every server workload.

What are AMD’s new EPYC chips?

The headline is AMD’s 6th Gen EPYC family, code-named Venice, announced on July 23, 2026, alongside the Helios rack-scale AI system and the Instinct MI400 family. Within 6th Gen EPYC, AMD positions the 9006X models for technical computing that can benefit from more L3 cache. The broader portfolio also targets cloud, enterprise, high-performance computing (HPC) and AI host-node deployments.

Helios illustrates the scale of the launch: AMD describes the system as combining 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs with 18 Venice EPYC CPUs. That is a rack-scale configuration, not a description of a typical server or a compatibility guide for individual processors.

“New” also depends on which EPYC product you mean. AMD introduced its EPYC 4005 family in May 2025, using the AM5 socket for entry-level enterprise servers. The 4585PX is its cache-leading listed model, but it is not a 6th Gen EPYC processor.

How much L3 cache does EPYC 9006X have?

AMD’s 2026 technical materials give the EPYC 9006X X-series a maximum of 1,152 MB of L3 cache. AMD also claims up to three times as much L3 cache per core as in comparable EPYC 9006 SP7 parts. These are family-level maximum and comparison claims; they do not establish the cache capacity of every 9006X SKU or mean each model has three times the cache of every SP7 processor.

For scale, AMD listed 128 MB of L3 cache for the 16-core EPYC 4585PX in its 2025 EPYC 4005 launch information. Cache capacity alone is not a complete performance comparison: the processor model, core count, memory configuration, software and workload all matter.

Which EPYC should you consider?

These figures describe different product tiers and generations, so they are useful for orientation rather than a like-for-like benchmark. AMD’s published specifications and claims are summarized below.

Processor or family L3 cache Cores and threads Memory and clock information Platform, power and price
EPYC 9006X X-series, 6th Gen Up to 1,152 MB; AMD claims up to 3× L3 cache per core versus comparable EPYC 9006 SP7 parts. Family maximums listed on AMD’s 6th Gen product page: up to 512 threads. Core count for a specific 9006X model is not stated here. AMD lists up to 16 memory channels and support for MRDIMM at up to 12.8 GT/s across the 6th Gen platform. The 9006X technical page cites up to 1.6 TB/s memory bandwidth and frequencies above 5 GHz; those figures are not guarantees for every SKU or configuration. Individual 9006X model pricing, socket details, system availability and per-SKU power figures are not stated here.
EPYC 4585PX, EPYC 4005 family 128 MB. 16 cores / 32 threads. 4.3 GHz base clock; maximum boost up to 5.7 GHz. AM5 socket; 170 W default TDP. AMD’s listed $699 1KU price is a 1,000-unit price, not a stated retail price.

The 9006X figures describe AMD’s newer, higher-end cache-focused server family; the 4585PX is a specific AM5 server processor with published core, clock and price details. Choose between them only after checking the exact workload, complete system and validated platform support—not by comparing cache totals alone.

Why can more cache help HPC and analytics?

A processor can spend time waiting when data needed by a workload is not readily available near the cores. A larger L3 cache can keep more of a working set close to those cores, potentially reducing some memory waits and improving time to insight. AMD identifies simulation, modeling, large-scale analytics and large-context reasoning as examples of memory-sensitive workloads for which 9006X’s larger cache may be useful.

That advantage is workload-dependent. If an application does not reuse data in a way that benefits from the larger cache, or if another limit dominates performance, extra L3 capacity may not deliver a meaningful improvement. Memory bandwidth, channel configuration, core count, clock behavior, software and power constraints also affect results. AMD’s stated cache comparison is a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark showing the same speedup for every application.

Is EPYC 4585PX compatible with an AM5 server board?

EPYC 4005 uses the AM5 socket, but socket fit alone does not establish that a processor will work in a particular board or complete system. AMD describes the family for servers, blades and towers; this is not a promise of drop-in compatibility with a consumer desktop motherboard. Before buying, confirm the processor is supported by the board or server maker’s validated configuration, including firmware, cooling and memory support.

  • Platform validation: Check the exact processor model against the board or OEM support list and required firmware.
  • Cooling and power: The 4585PX has a 170 W default TDP; make sure the complete system’s cooling and power design supports the selected CPU.
  • Memory: Confirm the memory type and configuration supported by the specific board or server. Do not assume 6th Gen memory figures apply to EPYC 4005.
  • System use: Verify that the intended server, blade or tower configuration is supported, rather than relying on the AM5 socket name alone.

Are the new Venice EPYC CPUs available yet?

AMD announced 6th Gen EPYC on July 23, 2026. Earlier, on May 21, 2026, the company said Venice was ramping production on TSMC’s 2 nm process. Those announcements establish a launch and a production ramp, but the information available here does not establish when each individual processor can be ordered, its regional availability or its price. Check AMD and server-system vendors for model-specific availability and validated configurations.

The same May 2026 announcement described Verano as a planned 6th Gen EPYC processor optimized for performance per dollar per watt with advanced memory innovations. That is roadmap language, not confirmation that Verano is available. AMD chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su said the Venice production ramp “marks an important step forward in accelerating the next generation of AI infrastructure.”

How to interpret AMD’s performance claims

For context, AMD’s October 10, 2024 announcement for 5th Gen EPYC (Zen 5) claimed up to 17% higher IPC for enterprise and cloud workloads and up to 37% higher IPC for AI and HPC versus Zen 4. AMD based those figures on its internal fixed-frequency methodology. IPC is not the same as overall application performance, and those 2024 figures are not benchmarks of 6th Gen EPYC or proof of a 9006X cache benefit.

When comparing server CPUs, look for results that identify the exact SKU, software stack, memory configuration and test conditions. Treat vendor “up to” figures as ceilings under stated conditions, not as expected gains for an unspecified application.
