AMD’s COMPUTEX 2021 demonstration featured a Ryzen 5000 prototype with vertically stacked cache; contemporaneous coverage identified it as a Ryzen 9 5900X prototype with up to 192MB of L3 cache and up to 2TB/s of cache-link bandwidth. Those were demonstration figures—not specifications for a retail 192MB Ryzen 9 5900X X3D. The first retail Ryzen processor with 3D V-Cache was the 8-core Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

What AMD demonstrated at COMPUTEX 2021

AMD announced that it was demonstrating its first application of 3D chiplet technology: cache vertically bonded to a Ryzen 5000 Series processor prototype. The company described a hybrid-bond approach developed in close collaboration with TSMC and said production on future high-end products was on track to begin by the end of 2021. AMD’s announcement presented a technology demonstration, not a named shipping Ryzen 9 product. AMD’s May 31, 2021 announcement quotes CEO Lisa Su describing 3D chip design as “the next frontier of innovation in our industry.”

Where the 192MB and 2TB/s figures came from

Tom’s Hardware’s contemporaneous report on AMD’s demonstration identified the prototype as a Ryzen 9 5900X and described an additional 64MB cache die on each of its two core chiplets (CCDs). With the existing cache, that configuration could provide up to 96MB of L3 per CCD, or up to 192MB total across two CCDs. The same report gave a cache-link bandwidth figure of up to 2TB/s.

These numbers describe the two-CCD prototype configuration reported from the demonstration. AMD’s press release confirms vertically bonded cache but does not state the 192MB or 2TB/s figures. Neither number is a retail specification for a Ryzen 9 5900X X3D that AMD sold.

What the prototype performance figures mean

Tom’s Hardware reported two sets of gaming results from AMD’s demonstration. They are AMD demo results as reported by the publication, not independent benchmark testing or a promise of the same uplift in every game or system.

Reported result Test context How to interpret it
12% increase in Gears 5 Prototype compared with a standard Ryzen 9 5900X at a locked 4.0GHz, according to Tom’s Hardware’s report of AMD’s demo A result for that game and comparison setup, not a general performance guarantee
Average 15% increase across shown games AMD’s 1080p demonstration slides, as reported by Tom’s Hardware; games included Dota 2, Monster Hunter World, League of Legends, and Fortnite An average for AMD’s selected game lineup, not an independently replicated result

AMD later made a separate 15% gaming-performance claim for the retail Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Its launch footnote says AMD tested six games at 1920×1080 with high settings and identifies the systems and components used. That 2022 claim belongs to a different product and test; it should not be combined with the 2021 prototype results. See AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D launch announcement and footnote.

What AMD actually sold

AMD announced the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in January 2022 as its first consumer PC processor with 3D-stacked chiplets. It has 8 cores, unlike the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X prototype described in the COMPUTEX coverage. In March 2022, AMD said global on-shelf availability would begin April 20 at a suggested price of $449 USD. Those are historical launch details, not current availability or pricing. AMD’s March 2022 availability announcement gives the date and suggested price.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the relevant retail example of the technology. AMD’s later product families also include Ryzen X3D and EPYC processors with 3D V-Cache; AMD’s 3D V-Cache overview describes those subsequent product lines.
