AMD says a defect in Zen 5 processors can make the 16-bit and 32-bit forms of RDSEED return zero while incorrectly reporting success. The 64-bit form is not affected. AMD’s bulletin, AMD-SB-7055, describes temporary software workarounds and firmware mitigations that vary by processor family; owners should check their exact system with its manufacturer for the appropriate BIOS update.

What is the Zen 5 RDSEED bug?

RDSEED is a processor instruction used by software to obtain seed values for random-number generation. AMD says that on affected Zen 5 processors, the 16-bit and 32-bit forms may return zero at a rate inconsistent with randomness while incorrectly indicating success (CF=1). A program that relies on the success indication could therefore accept a zero value instead of recognizing that it should try again.

AMD identifies the issue as CVE-2025-62626 and rates it 7.2 (High) under CVSS. Its description says a local attacker could influence values returned by RDSEED and potentially cause software to consume insufficiently random values. This is AMD’s stated potential impact; the bulletin does not say that exploitation has been observed in the wild. Read AMD’s security bulletin.

Is RDSEED broken on Ryzen 9000, and which form is affected?

AMD’s bulletin identifies the issue as affecting Zen 5 processors, including product families for which it lists separate mitigation entries. Ryzen 9000 desktop systems are among the families covered. The defect applies to the 16-bit and 32-bit instruction forms, not every use of RDSEED.

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included

AMD states: “The 64-bit form of RDSEED is not affected.” That distinction is also the basis for one of AMD’s temporary software workarounds. Do not assume a single firmware version or date applies to all Ryzen 9000 systems—or to every Zen 5 product.

What can software do before the firmware mitigation?

AMD lists three temporary software approaches. These are ways to avoid or account for the affected behavior; they are not substitutes for checking whether the correct platform firmware is available for a system.

  • Use the 64-bit form: AMD says this form is unaffected.
  • Hide RDSEED from software feature discovery: AMD identifies CPUID Fn0000_0007_EBX[18] as the RDSEED feature bit. Its bulletin gives clearcpuid=rdseed as a Linux boot-command-line example and -rdseed for QEMU.
  • Treat zero as a failed result and retry: Software can handle a zero result as though CF=0 had been reported, then retry until it gets a non-zero value with CF=1.

Which option is appropriate depends on the software and platform. The bulletin describes these as interim software options, rather than one universal end-user setting.

How do I get the AMD RDSEED fix?

  1. Identify the exact computer or motherboard. Record its manufacturer and model, or the model of the complete system if it is a prebuilt PC or server.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s support page for that product. Look for a BIOS or firmware update that addresses AMD-SB-7055 or the RDSEED issue, and confirm the update applies to your exact model.
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s update instructions. Firmware packages and installation procedures are product-specific; do not install a package intended for a different board or system.
  4. Confirm the installed firmware version afterward. Compare the version on the system with the applicable release information from the OEM. If it is unclear whether an update covers the issue, ask the OEM rather than applying a version listed for another Zen 5 family.

AMD’s instruction is: “Please contact your OEM for the BIOS update specific to your product(s).” The company’s mitigation table includes platform-initialization and/or microcode entries with different versions and timing across Ryzen, EPYC, and embedded products. For example, it lists Ryzen 9000 desktop ComboAM5PI versions dated November 25, 2025; a Ryzen AI 300 Series StrixKrackanFL1PI version dated December 15, 2025; and EPYC 9005-series microcode dated October 28, 2025, alongside an AGESA target date in late November 2025. Those examples are not interchangeable update instructions: use AMD’s current table and your OEM’s package for the exact product. Check AMD-SB-7055 for the product-specific mitigation information.
