AMD says development of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox is progressing to support a launch in 2027, but that is not confirmation that consumers will be able to buy it that year. Xbox has since named the console Project Helix and said it plans to send developer alpha hardware beginning in 2027. Microsoft has not announced a retail release date in its Project Helix update.

Did AMD confirm the next Xbox will launch in 2027?

No. On AMD’s Q4 2025 earnings call, CEO Lisa Su said: “Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” The phrase “to support” describes the goal of AMD’s development work; it is not a Microsoft announcement that the console will reach stores in 2027. AMD is a chip partner, not the company setting Xbox’s consumer release date. The statement is useful evidence of a 2027 development target, but it should not be read as a guaranteed launch window. MobileSyrup reported Su’s remarks.

What is Project Helix?

Project Helix is the name Xbox gave its next-generation first-party console in a March 11, 2026 update. Xbox VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and is powered by a custom AMD SoC. Xbox also said the hardware is being co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. These details describe the platform’s announced direction, not final specifications or a complete feature list. Xbox’s Project Helix announcement.

What does Xbox plan to do in 2027?

Xbox said it plans to ship alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Ronald described this as a developer hardware milestone. Alpha units let developers work with hardware ahead of a consumer product; their planned shipment does not establish when the finished console will go on sale.

Xbox’s 2025 partnership announcement described a multi-year collaboration with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including future first-party consoles and cloud. AMD’s annual report likewise describes its semi-custom products as customer-specific solutions and identifies semi-custom SoCs in Xbox Series X|S and other gaming systems. Should you wait for Project Helix?

The announcements do not provide a consumer release date, price, preorder information, or final specifications, so they are not enough to make a timing-based buying recommendation. If you need a console now, these statements do not establish that waiting will get you a new Xbox in 2027. If you are following Project Helix, treat 2027 as a development milestone and look for an Xbox announcement before assuming when it will be available to buy.
