AMD announced both at COMPUTEX 2025; the 9970X has 32 cores, while the 9980X has 64.
Which Threadripper 9000 models have 32 and 64 cores?
AMD’s Threadripper 9000 family uses the codename Shimada Peak. The 32-core desktop model is the Ryzen Threadripper 9970X, and the 64-core model is the Ryzen Threadripper 9980X. AMD’s announcement and official 9980X product page identify the products and their specifications.

Specifications and announcement-era suggested prices are from AMD’s 2025 announcement. The prices are not a statement of current retail pricing or availability. Core counts alone do not establish how much faster one processor is for a particular workload; that depends on the application and performance testing.
What “spotted” means in the original reports
The “spotted” wording refers to the earlier period when the product names and configurations were being reported ahead of the family’s official announcement. It is no longer accurate to describe the 32- and 64-core identities as unresolved leaks: AMD subsequently announced Threadripper 9000 at COMPUTEX 2025 and identified these models as the 9970X and 9980X.

Check compatibility before building a system
Do not choose a motherboard based on the processor name alone. Confirm that the specific board’s official CPU support list includes the exact processor and check its required BIOS version. AMD’s Threadripper PRO 9000 Series Quick Reference Guide is a reference for the PRO line; it should not be treated as a substitute for checking support for a non-PRO Threadripper 9000 CPU on the board manufacturer’s support page.
