ASRock referred to it as “newly launched” in March 2026 before AMD had announced it; AMD officially announced availability on April 22, 2026. Its distinguishing feature is 3D V-Cache on both processor chiplets, and AMD lists 16 cores, 32 threads, 208MB of total cache, and a $899 suggested e-tail price at release.
Is the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 real?
Yes. AMD announced the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition on April 22, 2026, and said it was available through leading retailers and in OEM systems. The earlier “secret CPU” story came from an ASRock press release in March 2026 that called the processor “newly launched” before AMD had made its own announcement. HotHardware reported on that premature reference on March 21, 2026: HotHardware’s report on ASRock’s early reference. AMD’s announcement is the source for the final release status and specifications: AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 announcement.
What does “Dual 3D V-Cache” mean?
AMD describes the 9950X3D2 as its first desktop processor with 3D V-Cache on both chiplets. It is a Zen 5 desktop CPU with second-generation 3D V-Cache across all 16 cores. In practical terms, the “Dual Edition” name points to cache on both processor chiplets, rather than indicating two separate processors.
AMD says its second-generation design places the stacked cache beneath the processor cores. The company says this arrangement helps lower temperatures, support higher sustained frequencies, and improve efficiency; those are AMD’s design claims, not independent measurements.

AMD’s 208MB figure is total cache and includes L2 and L3; it is not an L3-only number. AMD describes 5.6GHz as the maximum boost frequency achievable during a bursty workload. Actual frequency and how long it is sustained vary with the application and thermal conditions, so do not read it as a guaranteed all-core clock. The full specifications and AMD’s performance notes appear in AMD’s product announcement.
What performance has AMD reported?
AMD reports an average 5% to 8% uplift over the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in selected creator workloads and large source-code builds. Its examples include DaVinci Resolve and Blender, plus Unreal Engine and Chromium builds. AMD says the cited testing took place in February 2026. The release identifies AMD performance labs for the Unreal Engine and Chromium compile comparisons and BOXX performance labs for other cited comparisons; its test-system notes include 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, Windows 11 Pro, an X870E motherboard, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090.

- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
This is vendor-reported testing, not an independent review result. AMD positions the processor for gamers as well as developers and creators, but the cited results do not establish a gaming uplift. The X3D name and extra cache alone are not a substitute for game-by-game benchmark comparisons.
Does it work with every AM5 motherboard?
No blanket compatibility claim is warranted. ASRock’s current AM5 CPU support list includes the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, identifies it as Granite Ridge, and lists a 200W rating. That confirms support on listed ASRock boards, not on every AM5 motherboard. Check the CPU support list for your exact board model and the required BIOS version before upgrading: ASRock’s AM5 CPU support list.

- Powerful Content Creation and Game Performance
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 72 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- Cooler not included
AMD’s release calls the processor a drop-in upgrade on AM5, but an existing system still needs a compatible motherboard and firmware. A 200W TDP is relevant when evaluating the system’s thermal and power setup; the sources cited here do not establish a particular cooler as mandatory.
