ASUS lists AMD’s Ryzen 9 8940HX in its 2025 ROG Strix G16 gaming-laptop family, making the G16 the clearest publicly specified laptop pairing for this Dragon Range Refresh processor. ASUS publishes 16 cores, 32 threads, a 2.4 GHz base clock, up to 5.3 GHz boost, and 80 MB cache. The exact GPU and other components vary by regional configuration, and the available specifications do not establish benchmark gains over earlier Ryzen HX chips.
What is the Ryzen 9 8940HX?
The Ryzen 9 8940HX is a high-end mobile processor in AMD’s Dragon Range Refresh family. ASUS’s 2025 ROG Strix G16 specifications list it with 16 cores and 32 threads, a 2.4 GHz base clock, up to 5.3 GHz boost, and 80 MB cache. Notebookcheck’s processor database dates its debut to April 2025.

AMD’s 2025 Ryzen consumer quick-reference guide also places the Ryzen 9 8945HX in the Dragon Range-R family. The shared family label is useful context, but it does not by itself establish that the 8940HX is a renamed or performance-equivalent version of a particular earlier chip.
Which ASUS ROG Strix laptop has it?
ASUS publicly lists the processor in the 2025 ROG Strix G16. Notebookcheck reported that ASUS had listed a G16 configuration on JD.com with the Ryzen 9 8940HX and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, describing it as the first visible Dragon Range Refresh system. ASUS regional specification pages show other G16 GPU configurations, including an RTX 5070 and an RTX 5060. The G16 family name therefore does not identify one fixed component set.

Check the exact listing or regional SKU before buying. Compare the GPU model and power limit, display resolution and refresh rate, memory capacity and upgradeability, SSD capacity, cooling design, battery, weight, warranty region, and current price. The UK ROG Strix G16 specifications and other regional pages can describe different configurations; a reported listing in one market does not establish availability in another.
How fast is the 8940HX G16?
The published CPU specifications indicate a 16-core, 32-thread processor with boost clocks up to 5.3 GHz. They do not show how fast a complete G16 performs in games or demanding applications. Laptop performance also depends on the exact GPU, its power limit, cooling, memory configuration, and the manufacturer’s power settings.
The published clock figures alone do not demonstrate a performance uplift over the Ryzen 9 7940HX or any other processor. No independent benchmark results or power-limit measurements are established in the available reporting, so treat claims about comparative speed as unverified unless they come with comparable tests of the exact laptop configurations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you verify before choosing one?
- Exact processor and GPU: Confirm the listing says Ryzen 9 8940HX and identify whether it has an RTX 5060, RTX 5070, or RTX 5070 Ti. Do not infer the GPU from “ROG Strix G16” alone.
- GPU power limit and cooling: Check the specific configuration’s published GPU power information and cooling design; the GPU name by itself is not enough to predict gaming performance.
- Screen and memory: Verify the panel resolution and refresh rate, installed RAM, and whether memory can be upgraded.
- Storage and portability: Check SSD capacity, battery specification, and weight for the precise regional model.
- Local terms and availability: Confirm the seller, warranty region, price, and stock for the SKU available where you live. Public listings do not guarantee universal retail availability.
Is it worth buying over newer Ryzen HX chips?
The listed core count and clock speeds make the 8940HX a substantial mobile CPU specification, but they are not enough to determine value against newer Ryzen HX laptops. Make the comparison between complete, locally available laptop SKUs: weigh measured performance for your workload against GPU, screen, memory, cooling, warranty, and price. Without comparable benchmark results and verified pricing for the exact models, there is no sound basis to call the 8940HX categorically faster or a better buy.
