Frontier became the first supercomputer to demonstrate exascale performance on the TOP500 High-Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark when it recorded 1.102 exaflop/s in June 2022. The system is housed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and combines an HPE Cray EX platform with AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators.

What does “exascale” mean?

Exascale describes a computing rate above 1018 floating-point operations per second—one quintillion calculations per second. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) uses that threshold to describe exascale performance (DOE Office of Science, June 7, 2022).

For Frontier’s first-to-exascale milestone, the relevant measure was HPL, a benchmark used to rank supercomputers. TOP500’s June 2022 list recorded a result of 1.102 exaflop/s (TOP500, June 2022). That is the specific basis for calling Frontier the first exascale system.

Why was Frontier called the first?

“First” refers to demonstrated performance on HPL, not merely a system’s theoretical peak. TOP500 noted that Japan’s Fugaku had a theoretical peak above one exaflop, but Frontier was the only system on the June 2022 list to demonstrate exascale performance on HPL. A theoretical maximum and a benchmark result are different measures; they should not be treated as interchangeable.

What powered Frontier?

Frontier is a DOE Office of Science system located at ORNL. Its achievement depended on an institutional partnership: DOE and ORNL hosted and operated the scientific computing resource, HPE supplied the system architecture, and AMD supplied key processors and accelerators.

The June 2022 TOP500 entry listed Frontier as an HPE Cray EX235a system with AMD EPYC processors, AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators, and a Slingshot-11 interconnect. The entry reported 8,730,112 cores (TOP500, June 2022).

How fast was it—and what does the HPL-AI score mean?

Frontier’s June 2022 HPL result was exactly 1.102 exaflop/s. DOE described the result in rounded form as 1.1 exaflops (DOE Office of Science).

ORNL also reported about 6.88 exaflops on HPL-AI around the time of its May 30, 2022 announcement (ORNL, May 30, 2022). That figure belongs to a different, mixed-precision benchmark. It is not Frontier’s HPL score and should not replace the 1.102 exaflop/s result when describing the TOP500 milestone.

How did Frontier’s reported HPL performance change?

The June 2022 result marks Frontier’s debut milestone, not a current ranking or its last reported HPL result. The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility overview lists these later updates (OLCF Frontier overview):

Reported HPL performance Date
1.102 exaflop/s June 2022
1.194 exaflops May 2023
1.206 exaflops June 2024
1.353 exaflops November 2024

These dated figures show why a supercomputer’s “fastest” status needs a benchmark and a date attached. They are reported HPL performance updates, not claims that the June 2022 score was Frontier’s permanent maximum.

What can an exascale system help scientists study?

DOE identifies climate prediction, materials design for energy technologies, fusion, power-grid research, health research, and analysis of scientific-facility data among areas that can benefit from exascale computing (DOE Office of Science). ORNL describes simulation work involving cancer cells, supernovas, coronavirus, and atomic structure (ORNL).

Those examples describe research areas and computational capabilities, not discoveries proven by Frontier’s benchmark result. An HPL score demonstrates performance on a defined computing test; it does not by itself measure scientific, economic, or societal outcomes.
