AMD unveiled Carrizo, its 6th Generation A-Series mobile APU, on June 2, 2015. In selected tests run in AMD’s own labs, its 15-watt FX-8800P beat Intel’s 15-watt Core i7-5500U on several listed workloads. That was a launch-era, manufacturer-reported comparison—not proof that every Carrizo laptop was faster than every Intel system.
What AMD announced
AMD introduced Carrizo for notebooks and all-in-one PCs as its 6th Generation A-Series Processor. The performance-oriented Carrizo design combined Excavator x86 CPU cores and Radeon graphics cores in a system-on-chip (SoC). AMD presented Carrizo-L separately as a mainstream design based on Puma+ CPU cores, so the two names do not refer to identical processor designs. AMD’s November 2014 mobile roadmap announcement set out that distinction.
AMD had described Carrizo as its first high-performance SoC and, in a February 2015 architecture announcement, said it would contain 29 percent more transistors than Kaveri at nearly the same chip size. Those are AMD’s descriptions and figures, not independent assessments. The company’s February architecture notice also said Carrizo’s x86 cores alone were expected to use 40 percent less power than those in the prior-generation APU. That was a projection about x86-core power, not a claim that the entire processor or notebook would use 40 percent less power.
How Carrizo compared with Intel at 15 watts
AMD’s June launch material compared its 15-watt FX-8800P with Intel’s 15-watt Core i7-5500U in selected tests. AMD said its internal benchmark labs ran the tests. The published configurations included Windows 8.1 64-bit, 2 × 4 GB DDR3-1600 memory and a 256 GB SSD, along with specified graphics drivers. The results therefore describe particular systems, software, workloads and settings—not a controlled finding that applies to all laptops.

| Workload in AMD’s launch results | AMD FX-8800P | Intel Core i7-5500U |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Premiere Pro CC transcode | 51.74 seconds | 62.86 seconds |
| Adobe Photoshop Path Blur | 9 seconds | 11.52 seconds |
| Blender OpenCL | 6 seconds | 7 seconds |
| LibreOffice Calc Demo01 | 225.75 ms | 538.28 ms |
These are the manufacturer-reported figures in AMD’s June 2, 2015 launch announcement. They show the FX-8800P completing those specific tests in less time. They do not establish a general CPU or graphics-performance ranking: results can change with the laptop’s cooling, memory, firmware, drivers and power limits, as well as with the software and task being run.
What the 15-watt figure does—and does not—mean
In the launch comparison, “15 W” is the stated power class for each named processor. It makes the comparison a same-rated-power-class pitch, not a measurement of how much electricity either complete notebook used during each benchmark. A processor’s rated class also does not by itself determine a laptop’s battery life or sustained performance.

AMD’s February architecture announcement described power-management changes and forecast a generational performance-per-watt improvement. AMD Corporate Fellow Sam Naffziger said the optimizations were expected to deliver “the largest generational performance-per-watt gain ever for a mainstream AMD APU.” Both statements were forward-looking company claims at launch; they are not independent measurements of every Carrizo system.
Features AMD highlighted
AMD promoted Carrizo as a high-performance APU in an SoC design and highlighted several capabilities in its launch material:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- HEVC hardware decoding: AMD called Carrizo the first notebook APU with HEVC hardware decoding.
- HSA 1.0: AMD described Carrizo as compliant with the Heterogeneous System Architecture 1.0 specification.
- ARM TrustZone: The launch announcement also listed TrustZone capability.
These “first” and capability descriptions are AMD’s launch claims. They explain the feature set the company emphasized; they do not settle how much a particular user would benefit, which depends on software support and the laptop implementation.

Carrizo is a historical processor family rather than a current laptop generation. If you are researching an older machine, FX-8800P is a specific Carrizo-family model; AMD’s support page identifies the FX-8800P as part of the 6th Gen FX APU family. A model name can help identify a listing, but the 2015 benchmark results should not be used as a substitute for checking the condition, configuration and performance of the particular used laptop.
