BetaNews reported the rollout on October 23, 2014, and The eBook Reader reported on November 6 that an over-the-air update was rolling out to Fire HDX tablets. Amazon’s earlier announcement covered Fire OS 4 generally, so it does not establish that every Fire tablet received version 4.1.1.
When did Amazon roll out Fire OS 4.1.1?
Amazon announced Fire OS 4, also called “Sangria,” on September 17, 2014. The announcement described the broader operating-system release plan; it was not a version-specific announcement for 4.1.1. BetaNews reported the 4.1.1 rollout on October 23, and The eBook Reader reported an over-the-air update reaching Fire HDX tablets on November 6.
Those reports document a staggered historical rollout, not a present-day update. Neither establishes a complete rollout calendar by model or region. Amazon’s Fire OS 4 announcement, BetaNews’ October 23 report, and The eBook Reader’s November 6 report describe these different points in the timeline.
Which Fire tablets were included?
Amazon said Fire OS 4 would come preloaded on new Fire HD and Fire HDX tablets and be offered as a free over-the-air update for all third-generation Fire tablets. That statement concerns Fire OS 4 generally. The November 4.1.1 report specifically describes the update rolling out to Fire HDX tablets; it does not show that every generation or model received version 4.1.1 at the same time.

Amazon’s announcement did not provide a complete model-number compatibility list for 4.1.1, and the contemporary reports do not establish one either. For a specific tablet, identify the exact model rather than relying on its product family name.

Contemporary reporting described several additions and changes. These details come from the dated reports, not a located primary Amazon 4.1.1 release-notes page.

Amazon’s official announcement explains the broader Fire OS 4 release and its Smart Suspend claim: Introducing Fire OS 4 “Sangria”.
Was the update free?
Yes. Amazon described the Fire OS 4 over-the-air update for third-generation Fire tablets as free. The update itself did not require purchasing a tablet or accessory. This describes the announced Fire OS 4 availability; it should not be read as a separate, exhaustive eligibility statement for every 4.1.1 model.

How can you check for a Fire tablet software update today?
Fire OS 4.1.1 is a legacy release, so a current update question should be answered using the exact tablet model and Amazon’s current model-specific instructions—not by assuming that the 2014 rollout remains available or applies to the device.
