Amazon stopped using Blue Jay, its experimental multi-arm warehouse robot, in operations. What was Amazon’s Blue Jay robot designed to do?
Amazon introduced Blue Jay in October 2025 as a system that coordinated multiple robotic arms in one workspace. It was meant to combine work previously handled at three separate stations: picking items, stowing them, and consolidating orders. Amazon also said the system could assist employees with reaching and lifting tasks.
Amazon said it tested Blue Jay in production at one facility in South Carolina. The company described the robot as capable of handling approximately 75% of the various item types stored at its sites during that test. Was Blue Jay’s technology discarded?
No. Amazon says the underlying technology developed for Blue Jay is being carried over to other programs. Amazon spokesperson Terrence Clark told TechCrunch that “nearly all of the technologies” would continue to support employees across the company’s network. How ambitious was the project, and what did Amazon claim?
Amazon said Blue Jay moved from concept to production in just over a year, compared with three or more years for earlier systems such as Robin, Cardinal, and Sparrow. The company credited AI, digital twins, and experience gained from its existing robot fleet for the faster development timeline. That is Amazon’s account of its process; it does not establish that AI alone caused the speed or that the resulting system could be deployed economically at scale.
The company’s stated goal was to make technology a practical tool for safer, smarter, and more rewarding work. That describes an objective, not a measured outcome. The available reporting does not provide independent Blue Jay test results, quantified cost figures, or measured safety or productivity effects.

Does Blue Jay’s end mean Amazon’s warehouse robotics program is failing?
Blue Jay’s discontinuation is one project outcome, not a measure of Amazon’s entire robotics program. TechCrunch reported that Amazon announced its one-millionth warehouse robot in July 2025. The report also said Amazon claimed its DeepFleet model would increase fleet speed by 10%; that figure concerns the broader fleet model, not Blue Jay, and is a company claim rather than an independent measurement. The more useful distinction is between an experimental system designed to combine several tasks and technologies already deployed across a large fleet. Blue Jay’s rapid development and limited production test did not answer whether its particular combination of arms, tasks, manufacturing needs, and operational integration could work at scale. Amazon’s statement that its technology will be reused also shows why ending a named system does not necessarily mean abandoning every component developed for it.
