Some specific products sold on Amazon have been subject to fire, explosion, or other safety warnings, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has held Amazon responsible for recalls involving certain hazardous third-party products fulfilled by Amazon. That does not establish that Amazon products overall are unusually prone to fires or explosions. For shoppers, the practical step is to check the exact product and follow its official notice.

What the reports and regulators establish

“Amazon product” can refer to the sales channel, a brand such as AmazonBasics, a third-party seller, or Amazon’s fulfillment service. Those are not interchangeable. The CPSC case concerned specified products sold by third-party sellers using Fulfilled by Amazon—not a finding that products across Amazon’s marketplace are generally unsafe.

The CPSC decision covered three product groups

On July 30, 2024, the CPSC announced that it had unanimously found Amazon to be a distributor under the Consumer Product Safety Act for certain hazardous products sold by third-party sellers and fulfilled by Amazon. The products were faulty carbon monoxide detectors, hairdryers without electrocution protection, and children’s sleepwear that violated federal flammability standards. The CPSC said more than 400,000 products were subject to the order; that is the number of products covered, not a count of fires, injuries, or incidents. The agency said Amazon had not adequately notified the public or encouraged return or destruction of the products. CPSC’s 2024 decision addressed Amazon’s role in those specific recalls.

The final order specified recall communications

In 2025, the CPSC’s final remediation order required Amazon to post CPSC recall releases on Amazon.com on the day they were published, email original purchasers, display information on purchasers’ Your Orders pages, keep the releases on its recall page for at least five years, and submit monthly progress reports for five years. These are requirements of the CPSC order, not evidence that every unsafe product on the marketplace has been identified. Read the CPSC’s final order announcement.

Current CPSC notices show why checking the exact item matters

CPSC recall notices apply to specific models and remedies, not broad product categories. Its live recall list, accessed October 8, 2026, included separate warnings for Hererod jump starters and power banks, rechargeable hand warmers, and portable camping showers. Their hazards and instructions differ:

  • Hererod jump starters and power banks: The CPSC notice dated September 17, 2026, says the internal lithium-ion batteries can explode and ignite. It urges consumers to dispose of affected products according to local hazardous-waste procedures.
  • Rechargeable hand warmers: CPSC listings dated October 1, 2026, say batteries and electrical components can overheat and ignite. Consumers should stop using recalled units and contact the company for a refund.
  • Portable camping showers: The October 1, 2026, listing says immersion heaters can ignite when partly or completely out of water. Consumers should stop using recalled units and contact the company for a refund.

These examples are not interchangeable, and the notices do not establish that all products of these types—or all products sold through Amazon—are affected. Use the live CPSC recall list to confirm model identifiers and the current instructions before acting; listings and remedies can change.

How to check whether an Amazon purchase was recalled

  1. Identify the item precisely. Find the make, model, serial or batch number on the product or packaging. A purchase record can help identify the seller and purchase date, but a product’s appearance or category alone is not enough to confirm a match.
  2. Search official recall information. Look up the product in the CPSC recall database. Also check Amazon’s Your Recalls and Product Safety Alerts area.
  3. Match the notice to your exact unit. Compare the model, serial or batch information and any other identifying details listed in the notice. If the details do not clearly match, contact the company named in the notice or the CPSC for guidance rather than assuming the product is included or excluded.
  4. Follow that notice’s remedy exactly. A notice may call for a refund, return, repair, destruction, or special disposal. Do not substitute one remedy for another, and do not use, repair, give away, or discard the item contrary to the notice.

Amazon says its safety process includes monitoring, reviewing potentially unsafe listings, and providing a customer recall-alert page. That description is Amazon’s account of its process; official recall notices and the CPSC’s order are distinct sources of safety instructions and regulatory requirements. Amazon’s product safety information explains its alerts.

What the AmazonBasics review reports do—and do not—show

A September 29, 2020, Congressional Record passage recounted a CNN analysis reporting that, since 2016, more than 1,500 reviews across more than 70 AmazonBasics items described products exploding, catching fire, smoking, melting, having electrical malfunctions, or posing other risks. This is a historical review-based report repeated in a congressional record; it is not an official incident count, a controlled study, or a rate measured against the number of products sold. It does not establish that every reviewed product was defective or show the current prevalence of hazards across Amazon’s catalog. Read the Congressional Record passage.

What to do if a product catches fire or appears ready to ignite

Put personal safety first. Move away from an active fire and contact emergency services if needed; do not risk injury trying to retrieve a product. Once safe, do not resume using the item. Check the exact product against the official recall notice and follow its instructions for reporting, return, repair, refund, or disposal. A recalled battery-powered product may require special handling, so do not put it in household trash unless the notice or local hazardous-waste guidance says that is appropriate.
