Amazon does not offer one switch that stops all collection or use of your information. Instead, its U.S. account, website, browser, Alexa app, and Echo Show controls let you manage particular information and preferences—such as browsing history, recommendations, ad personalization, and Alexa recordings. A setting changes only the activity it describes; deleting Alexa recordings, for example, does not necessarily erase every record connected to an interaction.
Where Amazon’s privacy controls are
Controls are spread across Amazon’s website, apps, and devices. Amazon says the website’s Privacy Notice directs customers to “Your Account” for information such as name, address, payment options, profile, Prime membership, household settings, and purchase history. Other preferences are available in the relevant service or device.
- General account information: Go to Your Account on Amazon’s U.S. website.
- Browsing, recommendations, and ad preferences: Look for Your Browsing History, Improve Your Recommendations, and Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- Alexa history and preferences: In the Alexa app or on an Echo Show, the documented route is More > Alexa Privacy. Amazon also provides an Alexa Privacy Settings page. Menu names can vary with device and software version.
- Formal data request: Amazon directs customers to Data Privacy Queries for requests that may be available under applicable law.
These are U.S.-facing Amazon sources and instructions; available rights and interface details may differ by location, device, or software version.
What you can control for your Amazon account and shopping activity
Account information
Use Your Account to review and update the account details Amazon lists there, including contact, payment, profile, membership, household, and purchase-history information. Updating information is not necessarily the same as erasing its earlier version: Amazon’s Privacy Notice says it usually keeps a prior version when account information is updated.

Browsing history and recommendations
Amazon provides controls to manage browsing history and improve recommendations, including removing an item from recommendations. These controls can change what appears in browsing-history views or recommendations; they are not a general deletion of all information Amazon may hold about shopping activity.
Cookies and signed-out browsing
Signing out and blocking browser cookies can help avoid linking website browsing history to an Amazon account, according to Amazon’s Privacy Notice. Cookies also support core shopping and sign-in functions. Blocking them can interfere with features such as the cart, checkout, or signing in, and does not prevent every form of Amazon data processing.

What Alexa privacy settings change
Reviewing and deleting Alexa history
Amazon says customers can review and delete cloud voice recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests to Alexa using Alexa Privacy controls. This covers the listed Alexa history, not necessarily every record relating to an interaction.
Automatic deletion and saving recordings
Amazon documents automatic deletion choices of three or eighteen months. It also offers a choice not to save voice recordings. If recording storage is disabled, Amazon says transcripts and typed requests may remain for 30 days after the last request in a chat.

Records that may remain
Amazon cautions that deleting the listed Alexa history does not necessarily delete other interaction records, attachments, information supplied during interactions, actions taken, product searches, data held by third-party skill developers, or information stored outside Amazon’s cloud. Processing a deletion request may also take time. The practical scope is therefore narrower than “erase everything Alexa knows about me.”
Smart-home and skill permissions
Alexa Privacy settings also include controls for smart-home history and permissions related to skills and advertising. Review the options in the Alexa app or on the Echo Show itself; available labels and controls can differ by device and software version.

What Amazon’s ad controls do—and don’t do
Amazon’s Alexa FAQ describes an option to opt out of interest-based ads delivered by Amazon on Alexa. That is not an ad-off switch: Amazon says customers may still receive ads and personalized recommendations.
On Echo Show, Amazon says sponsored ads cannot be turned off. You can hide an individual ad for 30 days; the device help page also says an ad can be skipped by swiping from right to left on the screen. For Amazon interest-based ad preferences on Echo Show, the documented route is Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data. These controls affect the preference or individual ad described, not every ad or recommendation across Amazon services.
Deletion and legal privacy requests are different actions
Deleting a history item or changing an advertising preference is a service-level control. It is not the same as a formal request for access to or deletion of personal information. Amazon’s Privacy Notice says customers may have rights to request access to or deletion of personal information to the extent required by applicable law, and directs them to Data Privacy Queries. The right is qualified by applicable law; it should not be read as a universal promise covering every customer or every category of information.
