In the U.S., Amazon lists Prime at $14.99 a month or $139 a year. Non-members can get free delivery on eligible orders of at least $35, though Amazon says that option can take five to eight days. Compare your own orders and needs—not Amazon’s average savings claim—to decide whether membership pays off for you.
What Prime costs compared with shopping without it
Amazon’s listed U.S. prices are $14.99 monthly or $139 annually. Paying annually averages about $11.58 a month over 12 months and costs $40.88 less than paying $14.99 for 12 months. Those monthly average and savings figures are calculations from Amazon’s listed prices, before taxes or other terms.

Shopping without Prime has no membership fee. For eligible items fulfilled and shipped by Amazon, non-members can get free delivery on orders of at least $35. Amazon states a delivery window of five to eight days for this option. Eligibility depends on the item and order; the threshold does not guarantee that every product, third-party seller, or shipment qualifies. Check the item and delivery terms at checkout. Amazon says more than 300 million U.S. items are eligible for free Prime shipping, with tens of millions available for Same-Day or One-Day Delivery. These figures describe Amazon’s stated coverage, not a promise that a particular item can arrive quickly at your address. Confirm the delivery date shown for your location.

What Prime adds beyond delivery
Prime is a bundle. Its non-shipping benefits count toward its value only if you would use them; an included service does not make the fee worthwhile automatically.
- Shopping offers: Amazon lists early access to Lightning Deals, exclusive shopping events, and deals at Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market. Offers rotate, and grocery availability and delivery options depend on the area.
- Partner services: Amazon lists Grubhub+ and Buy With Prime at participating third-party retailers. Buy With Prime is not accepted by every merchant.
- Digital benefits: Amazon’s 2026 overview names Prime Video, Amazon Music, Amazon Luna, and Amazon Photos, as well as grocery benefits and prescription savings. The usefulness and availability of individual benefits may vary.
Amazon reports that U.S. Prime members saved an average of more than $500 on delivery in the prior year in its 2025 free-delivery explainer. That is Amazon’s own average, not an independent estimate or a prediction of your savings. Your order history is a better basis for a personal decision.

Prime Video is not the same as ad-free Prime Video
Amazon says the core Prime Video benefit is included with Prime. Its March 13, 2026 announcement, updated April 10, describes Prime Video Ultra as a separate U.S. subscription: $4.99 monthly, or $45.99 annually for customers with an annual Prime plan. Ultra adds ad-free viewing, UHD/4K, and Dolby Atmos. Amazon’s comparison lists HD and HDR features, up to four concurrent streams, and up to 50 downloads for the included Prime Video benefit. Live events and some content may still include ads with Ultra; device, title, and bandwidth limits apply. See Amazon’s Prime Video Ultra announcement for the terms.
How to work out whether Prime is worth it for you
- Use the price that applies to you. Compare the monthly or annual plan, or a discounted plan if you qualify.
- Review recent Amazon orders. Mark which orders would not have qualified for the non-member $35 free-delivery offer. Estimate the shipping fees you would actually have paid, and decide whether the five-to-eight-day delivery window would have worked for those purchases.
- Value only benefits you expect to use. Consider whether faster delivery, relevant shopping offers, local grocery options, Prime Video, or another included service matters to your household. Keep paid add-ons such as Prime Video Ultra separate from the Prime fee.
- Check the actual terms before enrolling. Item eligibility, delivery dates, local availability, partner participation, and plan terms can vary. Recheck the price and benefit details on Amazon before you decide.
For example, compare the annual fee with the delivery charges you would otherwise pay on orders that fail the non-member free-delivery conditions. Then add a value for benefits you would genuinely use. If that combined value falls short of the fee, shopping without Prime—or choosing a month only when you need it—may fit better. This is a personal estimate, not a universal break-even calculation.

Discounted Prime plans
Lower-cost options may change the comparison if you meet Amazon’s eligibility requirements:
- Students and young adults: Amazon says eligible higher-education students and young adults aged 18–24 can receive a six-month $0 trial, then pay $7.49 monthly or $69 annually.
- Prime Access: Qualifying government-assistance recipients and income-verified customers may pay $6.99 monthly after an eligible 30-day trial. Amazon requires verification and annual re-verification.
