You can shop on Amazon with a free account; Prime is an optional paid membership. Whether Prime is worth its fee depends on the benefits your household would actually use—such as eligible faster delivery or included entertainment—not on the number of perks listed on a benefits page. A basic Amazon account also includes Amazon Pay, which Amazon says is free.

What does a free Amazon account include?

A basic Amazon account lets you use Amazon Pay without paying for Prime. Amazon Pay is a payment service, not a Prime benefit or a Prime membership. Amazon Pay Team put it plainly in a 2022 article: “If you have a basic Amazon account, you already have Amazon Pay.” Read Amazon’s explanation of Amazon Pay and Prime.

Prime is a separate paid subscription. You do not need it simply to have an Amazon account or to use Amazon Pay. So if you shop occasionally and do not need Prime’s specific benefits, a free account may be enough.

What do you get with Amazon Prime?

Amazon lists benefits across delivery, entertainment, shopping and other services. The details can depend on the item, address, service, and current terms, so treat these as benefit categories rather than a guarantee that every item or feature is available to every member.

  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
  • Eligible delivery: Amazon advertises fast delivery options, including Same-Day, One-Day and Two-Day delivery on millions of items. Availability and speed depend on eligibility; not every item or address qualifies. See Amazon’s Prime benefits page.
  • Entertainment: Prime includes access to selected Prime Video content and features from services such as Amazon Music, Prime Gaming, Prime Reading and Amazon Photos. Check the current catalog and terms to see what is included where you live.
  • Shopping offers: Prime members may receive access to offers such as Prime Day. The value depends on whether you would buy the items anyway and whether the discount is meaningful to you.
  • Participating-store checkout: Buy with Prime can extend certain shopping benefits to participating online stores. It requires Prime membership, and the feature is not available at every store. Amazon lists delivery geography as the contiguous U.S., Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico; item, merchant and service terms still matter. Review Amazon’s Buy with Prime information.

Prime Video add-on subscriptions are separate offers, not automatically included in the standard membership fee. Amazon’s Associates materials identify add-on subscriptions separately; check the channel’s current price and terms before subscribing. See Amazon Associates’ Prime-related help information.

How much does Amazon Prime cost?

Amazon’s June 2025 U.S. announcement listed the following prices. These are dated announcement prices, not a live checkout quote; confirm the current price, plan availability and eligibility with Amazon before joining.

Membership Price listed by Amazon Who it applies to
Standard Prime $14.99 per month or $139 per year Standard U.S. membership, per Amazon’s June 2025 announcement
Prime for Young Adults $7.49 per month or $69 per year after an eligible six-month $0 trial Eligible young adults; eligibility and trial terms apply
Prime Access $6.99 per month Qualifying customers; eligibility applies

At the standard monthly rate Amazon listed in June 2025, 12 payments total $179.88. That is $40.88 more than the listed $139 annual price. The annual rate works out to about $11.58 per month for a full year, before taxes, assuming that price applies for the whole year. Annual billing means committing to the year, so the lower equivalent cost only helps if you expect to keep and use the membership long enough.

Check Amazon’s June 2025 U.S. announcement for the source of those listed prices.

Is Amazon Prime worth it for you?

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all savings figure. Estimate the value of benefits you would otherwise pay for or genuinely need, then compare that with the actual renewal charge shown for your account. Do not count a perk just because it is available, and do not count the same value twice.

  1. Start with delivery. Count orders for which Prime’s eligible speed would make a real difference. Do not treat every Amazon order as an avoided shipping charge or assume every item qualifies.
  2. Value entertainment you use. Consider Prime Video shows or other included services only if you actually watch, read, listen or play through them. Do not include paid add-on channels as if they were part of standard Prime.
  3. Add only useful offers. Count a discount or service only when you would have used it anyway and can identify what it replaces. A promotion on an unplanned purchase is not automatically a saving.
  4. Check location and eligibility. Confirm that the items, delivery address and any participating-store service you rely on are eligible. Check whether you qualify for a discounted membership rather than assuming you do.
  5. Compare against the plan you will actually pay for. Use the current renewal amount and billing frequency shown to you. Annual billing may lower the per-month equivalent but offers less flexibility than paying month to month.

If the benefits you can reasonably value do not add up to the fee, keep the free account. If you regularly use qualifying benefits worth more to you than the membership cost, Prime may be worthwhile for your circumstances.
