These 14 tips cover reading, notebook editing, AI tools, exports, and backups—but availability depends on which Kindle Scribe you own. Quick Notes, cloud-service exports, Alexa sharing, and several page-management actions require a Scribe released in 2025 or later. Check your model before following a tip; Amazon distinguishes the 2022, 2024, and 2025 generations on its device identification page.

Before you start: identify your Scribe and update it

Amazon provides separate Kindle user and quick-start guides for its device generations. Use the guide for your exact model when a menu or control below does not appear. At the time Amazon’s software page was checked, it listed version 5.19.6 for the Scribe generations represented there; that does not guarantee every device has received it. Check Amazon’s Kindle software updates page and the version installed on your own Scribe.

Make reading and notebook work easier

1. Keep Quick Notes as a scratchpad

On Scribes released in 2025 or later, Quick Notes is a notebook pinned to Home that returns to the last page you used. Open it from Home, tap the plus control to add a page, and use the chevrons to resize its Home view. It is handy for capturing a thought without first choosing or organizing a notebook. Quick Notes requires the Scribe to be registered to an Amazon account and connected to the internet. See Amazon’s Quick Notes instructions.

2. Move or copy a page into the right notebook

On models released in 2025 or later, open the notebook’s page-management controls, select the page, and choose the option to move it or make a copy in another notebook. Moving is useful when a page belongs somewhere else; copying lets you reuse it without removing the original. Amazon documents these actions in its multiple-page notebook guidance.

3. Manage several pages at once

Open a notebook and tap the multipage icon to see its page overview. Select the pages you want, then use the available controls to add, delete, move, or share them in bulk. Amazon also documents duplicating pages on Scribes released in 2025 or later. Multiselect is a faster way to tidy a notebook than opening and changing each page individually.

4. Insert pages after the pages that need them

In the same page overview, select a page and choose Add to place a page after it. If you select multiple pages, Amazon says a new page is added after each selected page. This is useful for expanding several sections of notes without repeatedly navigating to the end of the notebook.

5. Write on a book page with Active Canvas

Amazon introduced Active Canvas as a way to make room for notes in a book, including between lines of text. It is intended to let you annotate while keeping the reading flow. Amazon’s CES 2025 announcement describes the feature, but does not provide a complete step-by-step workflow; consult the guide for your Scribe generation for the controls on your device. Read Amazon’s CES 2025 announcement.

Use notebook AI tools carefully

Amazon’s notebook AI tools require an internet connection. Its published availability covers users in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Canada, and Australia, and the supported languages are English, Canadian French, and German. Pages or notebooks with 25 or fewer words cannot be processed, and some tables or diagrams are unsupported. Check Amazon’s notebook summarization and writing-refinement instructions if a tool is unavailable or a page is rejected.

  • Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.

6. Summarize a page or notebook

Open the notebook, open the GenAI tools, and choose a summary for the current page or the whole notebook. Amazon documents summaries of up to 15 pages at once. Use this to review a meeting’s notes or get a quick overview of a longer set of handwritten material, rather than treating the generated text as a substitute for checking the original notes.

7. Refine handwriting into cleaner text

From the GenAI tools, select Refine writing for a page or eligible notebook pages. Amazon documents a limit of up to 10 pages for this action. It can help turn rough notes into more readable text, but some tables and diagrams are not supported, so check the result against the handwriting before using it elsewhere.

Choose the right way to share notes

9. Convert handwriting to text when sharing

Amazon’s sharing flow can convert notebook handwriting to text. Handwriting recognition supports cursive, print, and a few emoticons. Set the recognition language to match the language used in the notebook; a mismatch can make the conversion less useful. See Amazon’s handwriting recognition troubleshooting page and sharing notes and notebooks instructions.

10. Send a searchable notebook PDF

Eligible Scribes released in 2025 or later offer a searchable PDF option in Amazon’s documented sharing flow. Searchable text is useful when the recipient needs to find words in the document as well as read the page. One exception matters: a searchable PDF made through Convert to text and email does not include edits made in the preview. Choose the export route with that limitation in mind.

11. Share only selected pages

Open the notebook page overview, select the pages the recipient needs, and choose Share. Depending on the sharing route, available outputs can include a PDF that preserves handwriting or converted text with a PDF copy. Selecting pages first avoids sending an entire notebook when only a few pages are relevant. Amazon lists routes and formats in its sharing instructions.

12. Connect a cloud destination for repeat exports

On eligible Scribes released in 2025 or later, Amazon documents notebook exports to Google Drive or OneDrive, and notebook sharing to OneNote. Depending on the destination and route, formats include handwritten PDF, converted text, searchable PDF for supported Drive routes, or PNG images for OneNote. You need a registered Scribe, internet access, and the relevant Google or Microsoft account. Follow Amazon’s cloud-service export instructions to connect the account and choose a destination.

Protect notes and use them beyond the Scribe

13. Leave Sync on for cloud backup

Amazon says, “Kindle Scribe notebooks are backed up to the Cloud when the device is connected to the internet and Sync is turned on.” If Sync is off, notebooks cannot be downloaded or backed up to the cloud. Amazon also says handwritten annotations are currently accessible only across Kindle Scribe devices. Review Amazon’s Kindle sync instructions if you need to check the setting.

14. Send a document or notebook to Alexa

Eligible Scribes released in 2025 or later can send notebooks, PDFs, and Word documents up to 25 MB to Alexa. Amazon says the files are available through Alexa.com, the Alexa app, and compatible devices, where Alexa can summarize them, answer questions, or create calendar events, reminders, and tasks. Alexa+ access is required. If you edit the original later, share it again: changes do not sync automatically. See Amazon’s Send to Alexa instructions.
