Amazon Honeycode is no longer available as a service for building new apps. AWS ended its beta service effective February 29, 2024. Before shutdown, Honeycode offered a spreadsheet-inspired way to build web and mobile apps, but its visual approach did not eliminate the work of designing data, workflows, and access—and the service’s end is now its most important limitation.

What was Amazon Honeycode?

Amazon Honeycode was a no-code app builder announced in beta on June 24, 2020. AWS described it as a fully managed service for creating interactive web and mobile applications without writing code. Its central building blocks were spreadsheet-like workbooks and tables: the tables held app data, while screens and automations let users work with that data through an app.

Builders could start with a template, import CSV data, or create a workbook from scratch. They could then assemble screens using elements such as lists, buttons, and input fields, and share the resulting apps with teammates. A workbook could support multiple apps drawing on the same tables. AWS framed Honeycode as a way to automate the database, business-logic, and interface layers of a business application.

How did Honeycode’s no-code model work?

Tables, formulas, and linked records

The editor drew on familiar spreadsheet concepts: tables, cell values, and formulas. AWS also described links between rows in different tables, allowing related records to be connected. Filters could select records for a particular screen, so an app could present a focused view of the underlying data rather than showing every row to every user.

App screens and automations

Users could build screens for tasks and use buttons or other screen objects to invoke automations. According to AWS, automations could run in response to a data change or a scheduled time, and could update tables or send reminders and notifications. In practical terms, that model was aimed at turning a shared data table into a guided workflow—for example, a request form that feeds an approval process.

Tasks AWS said it could support

AWS listed approvals, event scheduling, customer relationship management, surveys, to-do lists, and content or inventory tracking as intended use cases. These examples fit the product’s core proposition: provide a tailored interface and shared workflow around structured team data, rather than passing spreadsheet files back and forth.

What were Honeycode’s strengths and trade-offs?

It lowered the barrier to building a simple team app

Honeycode’s spreadsheet-like model and visual app construction were designed to make app creation approachable to people who were comfortable organizing information in tables but did not program. AWS’s startup guide described wizards and drag-and-drop construction, as well as ways to extend the service through Zapier and Amazon AppFlow.

That approach could make a modest internal workflow easier to prototype than commissioning custom software. A shared, table-backed app could also give teammates a common place to enter and review information, with screens shaped around particular tasks.

No-code did not mean no design work

The trade-off is that a visual editor does not decide how information should be structured or how a process should behave. Builders still needed to think through the data model, who could see or change records, the sequence of workflow steps, and how formulas and automations would affect the data. That is an implication of Honeycode’s tables-and-rules model, not a measured finding about user experience.

Integration options also had boundaries. In its historical review, InfoWorld identified Honeycode APIs and webhooks, Zapier, and Amazon AppFlow as routes beyond the builder. The review said AppFlow had a limited selection of integrations and supported Honeycode only as a data destination. Those observations describe the product at the time of that review, not a current integration service.

What did launch-era pricing and scale claims mean?

Honeycode’s published launch-era figures should be read as historical descriptions, not as current plans, limits, or performance guarantees. AWS’s June 2020 announcement said people could start free with up to 20 users. A separate AWS Startups Blog article described a free plan with up to 2,500 rows per workbook and “Plus” and “Pro” tiers. The differing user and row figures refer to different historical plan descriptions, so they should not be combined into a single current allowance.

In a June 2020 press release, AWS claimed workbooks could scale to 100,000 rows. That was a vendor-published claim, not an independently tested performance result, and it does not establish a current service limit. AWS later ended Honeycode, so none of these launch-era figures can be used to sign up for or assess a live plan.

Is Amazon Honeycode still available?

No. AWS announced that the Honeycode beta service would end effective February 29, 2024. AWS AppFlow’s document history records Honeycode’s discontinuation and the removal of related documentation on May 2, 2024. Honeycode is therefore not a viable platform for starting a new app, and its former feature descriptions are historical.

What should former users know about account and data access?

AWS’s Honeycode Shared Responsibility Model documents specific account and ownership consequences. A person who left a team would lose access to that team’s workbooks and apps; workbooks with that person as sole owner could be deleted. The document also says deleting an account deletes teams for which the account holder is the sole admin, along with workbooks and apps for which that person is the sole owner.

Those statements describe documented ownership behavior; they do not establish a complete shutdown export or recovery procedure. The available account guidance is not a basis for promising that former Honeycode data can still be retrieved.
