For a continuously CPU-heavy YouTube streaming or encoding workload, C7i is the better-supported starting point. AWS classifies C7i as compute optimized and identifies video encoding as a suitable workload; it recommends fixed-performance instances for consistently high CPU use. T3 may suit variable workloads, but its CPU-credit behavior and burst networking need careful consideration. AWS does not publish an apples-to-apples T3-versus-C7i benchmark for a particular YouTube encoder setup, so validate the exact instance size with your encoder and stream settings before relying on it.
How T3 and C7i differ for a YouTube stream
The central distinction is whether your encoder needs steady CPU capacity or uses CPU intermittently. T3 is a burstable general-purpose family: it accrues CPU credits below its baseline and spends them above it. C7i is compute optimized, making it the more natural candidate when encoding keeps CPU use high for long periods.
| Factor | T3 | C7i |
|---|---|---|
| Best-supported workload fit | Variable CPU use that can benefit from bursting | Compute-heavy work; AWS names video encoding as a suitable workload |
| CPU behavior | Credit-based; baseline and credit balance vary by size | Fixed-performance instance family, recommended by AWS for consistently high CPU workloads |
| Networking | Size-dependent; some sizes use network I/O credits to burst above baseline | Size-dependent bandwidth limits; a listed maximum is not a guarantee of end-to-end throughput |
| What the published specifications establish | Instance-level vCPU, memory, CPU baseline and network behavior | Instance-level vCPU, memory and network bandwidth |
| YouTube-specific encoder benchmark | Not stated in AWS’s cited instance information | Not stated in AWS’s cited instance information |
These family-level differences do not prove that a particular C7i size will encode a particular resolution or codec better than a particular T3 size. Your result depends on the encoder, codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, other work on the instance, and the route from the instance to YouTube ingest.
What the published instance sizes show
Compare the exact size you intend to run, not just the family name. The following are AWS-listed examples; “up to” network figures are ceilings or burst descriptions, not measurements of a sustained YouTube upload.

| Example size | vCPUs | Memory | CPU or network detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| t3.medium | 2 | 4 GiB | 20% CPU baseline per vCPU; up to 5 Gbps network burst bandwidth |
| t3.2xlarge | 8 | 32 GiB | 40% CPU baseline per vCPU; up to 2.78 Gbps network burst bandwidth |
| c7i.large | 2 | 4 GiB | Up to 12.5 Gbps network bandwidth |
| c7i.8xlarge | 32 | 64 GiB | 12.5 Gbps network bandwidth |
| c7i.48xlarge | 192 | 384 GiB | Up to 50 Gbps network bandwidth |
These are selected examples, not a complete family comparison. AWS lists different CPU, memory, and network limits by size. A larger specification alone does not show how many real-time encodes your application can sustain.
Understand T3 CPU credits and network bursts
CPU credits and sustained encoding
AWS defines one CPU credit as one vCPU running at 100% utilization for one minute. T3 instances earn credits while running below their CPU baseline and spend them when running above it. AWS says T3 instances start in Unlimited mode by default; sustained high utilization can incur additional charges under AWS’s terms. For an encoder that remains busy, check the selected size’s baseline, monitor credit behavior, and account for possible surplus-credit charges instead of assuming that burst performance is free or indefinitely available. See AWS’s T3 instance specifications and pricing context.

Network performance is size- and path-dependent
AWS documents that network bandwidth depends on instance size and traffic path. Smaller instances marked “up to” may burst above a baseline by using network I/O credits, and AWS notes constraints for traffic routed through an internet gateway. A stream that works briefly may therefore behave differently under sustained outbound traffic. Check the EC2 network bandwidth documentation and test outbound performance from the chosen size and region to your actual YouTube ingest path.
Choose a family based on the workload, then test the size
- Estimate whether encoding is continuous. If the instance will encode at high CPU utilization for most of the stream, start by evaluating C7i. If CPU use is intermittent and can stay within a T3 size’s baseline much of the time, T3 may be worth testing.
- Specify the actual encoder workload. Record the codec, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, number of simultaneous outputs, and any packaging or other processes sharing the instance. Without these details, a family label is not a capacity estimate.
- Shortlist exact sizes. Compare each candidate’s vCPU count, memory, CPU characteristics, and network limits on the AWS family pages. A small C7i and a large C7i are not interchangeable; neither are T3 sizes.
- Run the real workload for a representative duration. Monitor CPU utilization, encoder speed and dropped frames, memory use, network throughput, and—on T3—CPU-credit behavior. Test sustained output, not only startup or a short burst.
- Confirm the destination path and recovery behavior. Verify that the selected region and instance can sustain outbound throughput to the chosen YouTube ingest endpoint, and decide how the encoder and stream will recover if either the process or connection stops.
AWS’s instance-type guidance supports matching fixed-performance instances to consistently high CPU workloads. It does not provide a universal size recommendation for every YouTube stream.

Budget for more than EC2 instance hours
EC2 hourly pricing is only one part of a live-streaming system’s cost. AWS’s planning guide separates encoding and packaging from distribution, so include the services and data paths your architecture actually uses, as well as storage and any T3 surplus-credit charges that apply. The AWS live-streaming planning guide is a configuration-specific planning example, not a universal current quote.
AWS’s T3 page displays a Linux/Unix price context for US East (Northern Virginia). That regional example should not be treated as a global rate; check current pricing for your selected region, operating system, size, and usage pattern before estimating a bill. C7i pricing and the rest of your architecture should be checked on the same basis.

Common decision and troubleshooting cases
CPU stays high or the encoder falls behind
On T3, sustained use above baseline can consume credits and may lead to additional charges in Unlimited mode. Check CPU and credit metrics, then test a larger or fixed-performance candidate such as C7i against the same encoder settings. Do not assume that changing families alone solves an encoder configuration or software bottleneck.
The stream starts but later drops frames or disconnects
Separate encoding pressure from network behavior. Check encoder speed and CPU alongside sustained outbound throughput, and account for T3 network bursting and the selected instance’s path through the internet gateway. Repeat a sufficiently long test in the intended region; an “up to” bandwidth specification is not evidence that the whole path will sustain that rate.

The instance looks oversized or the bill is higher than expected
Measure actual CPU, memory, and outbound network use under the production workload before downsizing. For T3, include credit-mode and surplus-credit implications; for either family, include the additional live-streaming components in the architecture rather than comparing only instance-hour prices.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without maintaining an EC2 encoder, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home, and each slot streams your upload as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
