Android requires permission to install apps from outside Play, and the exact setting depends on your Android version and device. Which alternative makes sense depends on app availability, who distributes the app, how updates work, and any regional restrictions that apply to your device.
Ways to install Android apps without Google Play
Use another app store or repository
A third-party app store or repository provides apps through its own catalog and installation process. F-Droid is one example: it describes itself as a repository of verified free software and provides tools for operating a store. That description explains the project’s role; it is not a guarantee that every app in every repository is safe.
Download an APK from the developer
Android supports distribution through developer websites. In this route, you obtain an Android Package Kit (APK) from the developer and install it yourself. The developer may also handle updates on its site, so check how updates are provided rather than assuming they will arrive through Google Play.
Use private or enterprise distribution
Organizations can distribute apps through private or enterprise servers. This is mainly relevant when an employer or administrator provides apps for work; follow the organization’s instructions and verify that the source is the one it authorized.

Choose a source that fits your needs
There is no single best alternative for every app or user. Compare the source on these practical points:
- Availability: Check whether it actually offers the app you need. App catalogs were not exhaustively audited here.
- Publisher and source: Prefer the developer’s own site or a repository whose role is documented. A verified developer identity is not the same as a review of an app’s content or safety.
- Updates: Find out whether the store or repository manages updates, or whether you must return to the developer’s site and install them yourself.
- Permissions and effort: Installing from outside Play requires allowing the relevant source to install apps. Consider which app you are granting that permission to and whether you can disable it afterward.
- Region and device: Check whether current developer-verification rules cover your country, store, and certified device.
Avoid treating random APK download sites as interchangeable with an official developer source. The sources cited here do not establish a comparative trust ranking for third-party sites.

Allow installation from a source outside Google Play
Android’s setting depends on the OS version, and manufacturers may customize the menus. On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, permission is granted to a particular source, such as the browser or file manager opening the APK. On Android 7.1.1 (API 25) and earlier, the setting was a device-level “Unknown sources” option. Some network providers may also restrict unknown-source installation. - Get the APK from the developer you intend to use. Check the publisher and source before downloading.
- Open the APK. If Android blocks the installation, follow the prompt to the setting for allowing installs from that source. On newer Android versions, this permission is associated with the app opening the APK; menu labels and paths vary by device.
- Allow the install and complete the prompt. Once installed, review whether the source still needs permission to install apps and restrict it if it does not.
Install F-Droid
F-Droid’s documented setup is to download its official APK, allow the app that opens it to install apps when prompted, and then open the F-Droid client. The client downloads its repository before you browse and install apps. F-Droid recommends limiting which apps have permission to install other apps as a stronger security posture. What Google’s developer-verification rollout means
As described in Google Android Help checked on October 3, 2026, starting in September 2026, apps downloaded from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand must be registered by a verified developer. Google says an attempt to install an app from an unverified developer in this covered flow produces a notification and is blocked, with a one-time advanced-settings flow to bypass the block. The scope is specific to participating stores and certified devices in the named countries; it is not a blanket rule for every Android user worldwide. Check Google’s current country, store, and device guidance because the rollout can change.
Android Developers’ verification FAQ says, “You can continue to use any alternative app store,” and describes an advanced flow for power users who want to install apps from unverified developers. Google’s developer-console help clarifies that verification confirms developer identity, “not reviewing the content of their app or where it came from.” The FAQ and help pages should be read alongside the rollout’s regional and device scope, not as a guarantee that every installation path works identically everywhere.
