They are not interchangeable: one may show provider-reported activity, another local token-based cost estimates, and another subscription usage observations.
First decide what “usage” means
Before choosing a tracker, identify whether you want to see activity, tokens, actual charges, or remaining subscription allowance. A dashboard of accepted code, a local estimate of API-equivalent cost, and a provider’s billing record answer different questions.
- Activity and adoption: sessions, lines changed, accepted suggestions, or team trends.
- Token usage: quantities consumed, sometimes split by model.
- Spend: provider-reported charges or an estimate calculated from token use and API prices.
- Subscription quota: usage against a plan’s included limits or a last-observed allowance.
Anthropic explains that Claude Code metering depends on how you sign in: a subscription seat uses included plan usage, while an API key is pay-as-you-go and charged to the Console or cloud account. For API-key sessions, Claude Code’s /cost command shows running session spend; Anthropic also directs users to the Console or cloud-provider dashboard for account spend. Anthropic’s built-in analytics for organizations
Dashboard: adoption and value views
Anthropic’s Claude Code analytics dashboard is the lowest-infrastructure choice for eligible organizations. The dashboard guide lists Team plan Owners and Primary Owners; Enterprise Owners, Primary Owners, and Admins subject to seat requirements; and API Console Admin, Billing, and Developer roles as eligible. Individual Pro and Max accounts are not eligible for the organization analytics feature described there.

The Usage tab includes lines accepted, suggestion acceptance rate, activity trends, and top commands. The Value tab displays estimates such as productivity lift, cost per commit, and annual value, using formulas and assumptions that organizations can adjust. Those are organization-specific estimates, not universal measured productivity gains. Dashboard data refreshes daily.
Contribution metrics are described as public beta, require GitHub Cloud, and are unavailable to Console users. Check the dashboard guide for current eligibility and feature details.

Analytics API: custom organization reporting
Teams building their own reports can use Anthropic’s GET /v1/organizations/usage_report/claude_code endpoint. It returns daily, aggregated user activity, including sessions, lines added and removed, commits, pull requests, tool usage, model-level tokens, and estimated cost; cursor pagination is supported. The endpoint requires appropriate Admin API credentials—workspace API keys do not work. Anthropic says API data can lag by up to one hour in its Analytics API overview.
This is organization reporting rather than an individual-account tracker. Anthropic states that “The Claude Code Analytics API is not currently available” on Claude Platform on AWS; for AWS, its documentation points users to the Usage page in Claude Console. Enterprise activity for users on claude.ai follows a separate route: the Enterprise Analytics API uses a distinct API and key type.

OpenTelemetry for a team’s own monitoring stack
Claude Code can export metrics as time series, events through logs, and optionally distributed traces using OpenTelemetry. This gives teams a flexible route into a chosen observability backend and dashboard. Anthropic’s monitoring documentation describes the export options and configuration.
Privacy settings matter. Tool content is excluded from trace spans by default, but enabling detailed tool content can expose file contents, command output, and MCP, WebFetch, or WebSearch results. Raw API-body logging can include conversation history. Before enabling these options, decide what to collect, redact sensitive data where appropriate, and set retention controls that fit your organization’s requirements.

Hosted products such as telemetry.dev’s Claude Code OTel integration and Langfuse’s coding-agent tracing documentation describe ways to work with this kind of telemetry. Their feature pages establish what each vendor says it offers; they do not provide an independent quality ranking.

ccusage: local reports across multiple coding CLIs
ccusage is a local CLI that reads coding-agent CLI data and produces daily, weekly, monthly, and session reports. Its reports analyze local data, and its cost values are estimates. They are not proof of actual provider charges or a subscription’s remaining allowance.
Claude Code Usage: views in VS Code
The Claude Code Usage extension for VS Code documents local usage views for Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. It distinguishes official usage or quota observations from estimated API-equivalent prices. The extension is an editor-based convenience view; provider accounts remain the source of truth for billing.
How to choose and interpret a tracker
Compare options on audience, data source, agent coverage, freshness, granularity, customization, privacy controls, and setup effort. The most important distinction is whether a number is provider-reported, calculated from local records, or observed from a subscription interface.
- For team adoption metrics with little infrastructure, start with Anthropic’s dashboard if your plan and role qualify.
- For internal reporting based on organization activity, use the Analytics API if your organization has the required credentials and is on a supported platform.
- For a centralized monitoring pipeline, export OpenTelemetry and choose the backend and data-retention policy that suit your team.
- For personal history spanning several local agents, try ccusage; for an editor view limited to Claude Code and Codex, consider the VS Code extension.
When comparing reports, label the quantity precisely: token count, estimated API-equivalent cost, provider-reported spend, or subscription quota. A tracker that is convenient for session history may not be the right source for reconciling charges, and an organization dashboard is not a substitute for an individual Pro or Max usage view.
