ALMA maps the structure and motion of material in planet-forming disks; the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) adds infrared views of their chemistry and warmer regions. Neither observatory alone can prove that a particular gap, ring, or gas disturbance was made by a forming planet. Used together, their different measurements help astronomers connect where disk material is located with what it contains and how it moves.
How ALMA and JWST observe planet-forming disks
The key difference is the light each observatory measures. ALMA observes millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, while Webb’s instruments observe from visible-red light into the infrared. That means they trace different signals from a disk rather than producing interchangeable pictures.
NASA lists Webb’s overall instrument coverage as 0.6–27.9 microns, with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) covering 4.9–27.9 microns. These are instrument specifications: each instrument and observing mode uses only part of the full range. NASA’s instrument overview and its MIRI guide describe those capabilities.
What ALMA reveals
Dust structures and disk shape
ALMA’s continuum observations trace emission from dust grains. At high angular resolution, they can map structures such as rings, gaps, spirals, and asymmetries in a disk. These patterns help astronomers investigate how material is distributed as a planetary system takes shape.

Gas and motion
ALMA can also observe spectral lines from molecules in disk gas. Mapping those lines reveals gas distribution and motion; departures from expected disk rotation can be clues to processes affecting the gas, including a possible planet’s gravitational influence.
What ALMA cannot establish from a feature alone
A gap, ring, or gas-motion anomaly is evidence to interpret, not an automatic planet detection. Other processes may shape disk structure, and the exact role of observed structures in planet formation remains under debate, as the ESO ALMA Science Portal explains. The exoALMA campaign searches for still-forming planets by looking for their effects on gas dynamics; it is a search strategy, not a claim that every observed disturbance identifies a planet.

What JWST reveals
Infrared chemistry
Webb disperses infrared light into spectra, where molecular signatures can reveal species such as water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, and ammonia. Features in those spectra can also help researchers infer molecular quantities and temperatures. NASA describes Webb’s disk work as a way to investigate chemistry in inner regions, complementing ALMA’s observations of disk structure and gas.
Why the inner disk matters
Infrared observations provide diagnostics of warmer material, including regions associated with rocky-planet formation. Webb’s spectra do not simply duplicate an ALMA map: they add information about molecular content and thermal conditions that can help explain the environment in which solids and planets develop. The specific reach of an observation depends on its instrument, mode, target, and observing conditions.

Why observations from both observatories are useful
ALMA can show where millimeter-emitting dust and molecular gas are arranged and how gas moves; Webb can add infrared evidence about molecules and temperature. Together, these measurements let astronomers compare disk structure with chemical and thermal conditions. That fuller picture can strengthen or challenge interpretations of how a disk is evolving, while still leaving individual planet claims subject to evidence and modeling.
The DSHARP disks: a shared-target strategy
ALMA observed 20 nearby protoplanetary disks in 2018 through the DSHARP project. In a 2021 feature, updated on 2025-08-28, NASA described a plan for Webb to observe 17 of those disks. The plan illustrates how two observatories can examine related targets with different diagnostics; it should not be read as confirmation that all planned Webb observations were completed. NASA’s feature on Webb and forming planetary systems explains the survey rationale.

HOPS-315: evidence from different measurements
A 2026 ALMA Observatory release describes a joint ALMA and Webb study of the young system HOPS-315. Webb imaging and ALMA observations of gas motion were used by the research team to investigate a transition zone where infalling material settles into a more orderly rotating disk, alongside early solid formation. This is an example of what complementary observations can reveal about an early system—not a direct view of a finished planet appearing. The ALMA Observatory release describes the team’s interpretation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can ALMA or Webb see planets forming?
These observatories can study environments and effects associated with planet formation, but a disk feature is not the same as seeing a planet form. ALMA can search for the influence of a young planet on dust, gas, and motion; Webb can characterize infrared-emitting material and disk chemistry. Whether a specific feature supports a planet interpretation depends on the evidence, the observing setup, and how alternative explanations are evaluated.
Quick Recap
How to read claims about planet-forming disks
- Separate observation from interpretation: a ring or gap is a measured disk feature; a planet causing it is an explanation to test.
- Ask what was measured: continuum maps trace dust emission, molecular spectral lines trace gas, and infrared spectra reveal molecular and thermal clues.
- Check the scope: wavelength coverage alone does not determine what a telescope can resolve or detect in a particular target; distance, disk orientation, sensitivity, resolution, and observing mode matter.
- Distinguish plans from results: a proposed or described follow-up program is not proof that every target was observed or that a predicted signal was found.
