When formatting a Windows volume, allocation unit size and cluster size refer to the same filesystem setting: the amount of space the filesystem allocates at a time for file data. It is not the drive’s physical sector size. Choose the format tool’s default for general use unless you have a specific filesystem, workload, or compatibility requirement.
Are allocation unit size and cluster size the same?
In Windows volume-formatting terminology, yes. Microsoft’s legacy Win32_Volume Format method reference labels the parameter “Disk allocation unit size cluster size” and defines a cluster as the smallest amount of disk space that can be allocated to hold a file. “Allocation unit size” is the label you may see in a format dialog; “cluster size” is the common filesystem term for that unit.
The setting describes filesystem allocation, not a physical disk block. A cluster consists of sectors grouped together by the filesystem. For example, Microsoft’s exFAT specification defines a cluster as a consecutive series of sectors, with the number of sectors determined by the volume’s sectors-per-cluster value.
What does cluster size change?
How much space files occupy
The filesystem allocates file space in cluster-sized units. If a file does not fill its final cluster, some allocated space in that cluster may remain unused. Microsoft’s NTFS disk-space troubleshooting guidance explains that a file consumes at least one cluster depending on its initial size, and that additional allocation grows in multiples of the cluster size.

That does not translate into one reliable “wasted space” figure for every drive. The effect depends on the sizes and number of files, as well as filesystem features and allocation behavior. A volume containing many small files can be affected differently from one containing a few large files.
Filesystem limits and behavior
Cluster-size options and consequences vary by filesystem. Microsoft’s NTFS overview says supported NTFS volume and file sizes depend on cluster size and the supported number of clusters. Its current table lists a largest volume and file size of 16 TB for NTFS with 4 KB clusters and 256 TB with 64 KB clusters. These are support limits, not recommended settings; the overview also says NTFS volumes on Windows 10 version 1709 and later and Windows Server 2019 and later can be as large as 8 PB, with actual limits depending on cluster size and cluster count.

For exFAT, Microsoft’s specification describes cluster sizes from one sector up to 32 MB and gives a sector-size range of 512 bytes to 4096 bytes. Those specification bounds do not mean every formatting tool offers every possible size.
Filesystem features can also impose constraints. For example, Microsoft’s Windows format command reference says NTFS compression is not supported with allocation-unit sizes above 4096 bytes. NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32 also differ in their features, as shown in Microsoft’s filesystem functionality comparison.

Performance is workload-dependent
Cluster size changes allocation granularity, but that fact alone does not establish that a larger or smaller size will make a drive faster. The Microsoft documentation cited here describes allocation behavior and filesystem limits, not a universal performance winner. Treat any performance choice as workload- and filesystem-specific rather than assuming “larger is faster” or “smaller is better.”
How to choose a size when formatting
For a general-purpose volume, use the format tool’s default unless you have a concrete reason to change it. Microsoft’s older Win32 format reference says Windows chooses a default cluster size based on volume size when none is specified and recommends defaults for general use. That is legacy API guidance, not a guarantee that every current formatting tool or filesystem uses the same default.

Before setting a custom value, check the following:
- File-size mix: Many small files can make unused space in partially filled clusters more relevant.
- Filesystem limits and features: Confirm the cluster size works with the filesystem’s volume limits and any features you need, such as NTFS compression.
- Device compatibility: If the volume will be used with another operating system, device, or format utility, verify that it supports the filesystem and the selected options.
- Specific workload requirements: Use a documented requirement or relevant benchmark for your workload; changing cluster size by itself does not guarantee a speed improvement.
Where to set allocation unit size in Windows
Windows exposes this setting through formatting tools, though the available values depend on the filesystem and tool. Microsoft documents an -AllocationUnitSize parameter for PowerShell’s Format-Volume cmdlet and an /A option in the format command reference. Check the selected tool’s options for the volume you are formatting rather than assuming all filesystems accept the same sizes.
