In the two 2025 Bledisloe Tests, New Zealand beat more defenders than Australia in both matches, but the team with more possession and attacking volume changed. The All Blacks led those measures at Eden Park; the Wallabies led them in Perth. The results show why playing style is better compared through specific match actions than treated as a fixed national identity.
What the two 2025 Bledisloe Tests show
The official match-centre figures reveal a split between ball volume and line-breaking. At Eden Park, New Zealand had more possession, carries and passes, and made more metres. In Perth, Australia led each of those volume measures, yet New Zealand still beat more defenders and won the match.
| Measure | Eden Park, 27 September 2025 | Perth, 4 October 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Result | New Zealand 33, Australia 24 (Rugby Australia, match centre) | New Zealand 28, Australia 14 (Rugby Australia, match centre) |
| Possession | New Zealand 59%, Australia 41% (Rugby Australia, match centre) | Australia 53%, New Zealand 47% (Rugby Australia, match centre) |
| Carries | New Zealand 162, Australia 126 (Rugby Australia, match centre) | Australia 134, New Zealand 112 (Rugby Australia, match centre) |
| Passes | New Zealand 241, Australia 162 (Rugby Australia, match centre) | Australia 210, New Zealand 175 (Rugby Australia, match centre) |
| Metres | New Zealand 555, Australia 353 (Rugby Australia, match centre) | Australia 454, New Zealand 381 (Rugby Australia, match centre) |
| Defenders beaten | New Zealand 40, Australia 11 (Rugby Australia, match centre) | New Zealand 29, Australia 17 (Rugby Australia, match centre) |
| Tries | New Zealand four, Australia three (Rugby Australia, match centre) | Not stated in the cited match-centre figures. |
Possession, carries and passes describe how much a side used the ball; metres and defenders beaten help show what it did with those opportunities. None of these figures alone explains why the match unfolded as it did. The score, venue, tactics and execution all affect how a team chooses to attack or defend.
How the attacks created opportunities
New Zealand: close carrying and a passing option
The All Blacks’ account of the Eden Park match describes Ardie Savea carrying close to the line before Leroy Carter supported the scoring play. It also highlights a reverse-pass move involving Jordie Barrett and Quinn Tupaea that released Cam Roigard. Those sequences illustrate two different ways to threaten a defence: pressure near the line and a pass that changes the direction of attack.

The same report described the All Blacks’ tempo as “frenetic.” That is the report’s characterization of this match, not a measured tempo statistic or a claim about every New Zealand performance.
Australia: a forward platform followed by a running line
Rugby Australia’s Eden Park report describes a Wallabies try passage built from a strong maul and a Len Ikitau carry, followed by Harry Potter running a line. It is a concrete example of Australia using forward pressure and a carrier to create an opening for a runner—not proof that this is the team’s only or defining attacking pattern.

Why more possession did not mean more line breaks in Perth
Australia’s 53% possession, 134 carries, 210 passes and 454 metres in Perth show that it handled the ball more often and covered more ground than New Zealand by those measures. Yet the All Blacks beat 29 defenders to Australia’s 17 and won 28–14. Volume is not the same as effectiveness: a side can have more phases or metres without producing as many successful one-on-one breaks or points.
Execution also matters. Rugby Australia’s account of the Eden Park Test identifies penalties and missed touch-finding kicks as moments that handed momentum to New Zealand. Those details help explain how territory or pressure can shift, but they describe that match rather than a permanent Wallabies weakness.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about playing style
Across these two Tests, the clearest repeated contrast is that New Zealand beat more defenders in both matches, while the leader in possession, carries, passes and metres changed with the venue and match. That is a useful snapshot of how the teams played against each other in September and October 2025, not enough evidence to establish enduring national styles.
Playing choices respond to the opponent, score, venue, weather and available personnel. A separate All Blacks article published in September 2026 gives averages of 154.6 carries, 230 passes and 19.8 kicks from hand per match in its comparison with South Africa. Those figures concern New Zealand’s approach against South Africa in that season; they are not a direct All Blacks–Wallabies comparison.

So, how do the All Blacks and Wallabies play differently? In these two Bledisloe Tests, New Zealand more often beat the first defender, while Australia’s ball-volume advantage in Perth did not translate into more defenders beaten or a win. The match reports show varied routes to scoring on both sides, rather than a simple contrast between one attacking team and one defensive team.
