The 2025 Alienware Area-51 is a very fast high-end gaming desktop in HotHardware’s comparisons, but its results describe one specific, top-tier configuration—not every AAT2250. Ben Funk’s May 13, 2025 review tested a Core Ultra 9 285K, GeForce RTX 5090 with 32 GB of memory, 64 GB of dual-channel DDR5-6400, and a 2 TB SK Hynix PC811 Gen 4 NVMe SSD. That system excelled in many CPU and GPU benchmarks, while PCMark 10 was a notable weak spot relative to one previous comparison system.

What configuration did HotHardware review?

HotHardware’s benchmark and noise results apply to its review sample, which ran Windows 11 Pro 24H2. Its components were:

  • Processor: Intel Core Ultra 9 285K.
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 with 32 GB of memory.
  • Memory: 64 GB dual-channel DDR5-6400.
  • Storage: 2 TB SK Hynix PC811 Gen 4 NVMe SSD.

Dell’s AAT2250 product page offers configurable CPU, graphics, memory, storage, power, and cooling options. Its displayed configuration is not the same as HotHardware’s review system, so neither the review’s benchmark results nor its tested-system price should be treated as representative of every configuration.

How fast was it in the review’s benchmarks?

HotHardware reported strong results across many of its CPU and graphics comparisons. The Area-51 led in Speedometer 2.1 and 3, Cinebench R23 and 2024, Geekbench 5 and 6, 3DMark Time Spy Extreme, and 3DMark Port Royal. In Port Royal, the reviewer reported a 40% margin over the Maingear Apex Force it had recently tested. That figure belongs to this particular benchmark comparison; it is not a general performance advantage over other gaming PCs.

#1 Best Overall
Dell Alienware Area-51 AAT2250 Gaming Desktop - Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7, 64GB DDR5 RAM, 4TB SSD, Liquid Cooled, Wi-Fi 7, Windows 11 Home - Lunar Silver
  • Intel Core Ultra 9 285K 3.2GHz Processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7
  • 64GB DDR5-6400 RAM
  • 4TB Solid State Drive
  • 2.5GbE LAN; 2x2 Intel Killer WiFi 7 BE1750+Bluetooth 5.4

PCMark 10 was the clearest counterexample. The Area-51 scored about 12% slower overall than the Maingear ZERO HotHardware had reviewed the previous year, despite a strong Digital Content Creation subtest. As Funk put it, “PCMark 10 is not the best result for the Area-51.” The result shows why a collection of benchmark wins should not be read as a guarantee that the machine will lead in every mixed-use workload.

HotHardware also found that the review unit’s 2 TB SSD frequently read above 6.5 GB/s and generally wrote around 6 GB/s in ATTO. Those are results for the included SK Hynix PC811 drive in the reviewer’s test, not a performance promise for other storage options.

What did the game tests show?

The review’s gaming section included Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker and Forza Horizon 5. It does not establish a single expected frame rate for all buyers: FPS depends on the selected graphics card, game, resolution, graphics settings, and other system configuration. The RTX 5090 result is specifically for the tested top-tier sample. HotHardware points readers to its video review for newer game examples, but the cited written review does not provide a basis for inventing a universal FPS estimate.

How does Command Center and cooling work?

Performance controls and game detection

Alienware Command Center controls system performance and RGB lighting. HotHardware reports that it automatically selects Performance mode when it detects a recognized game launching. The review’s benchmark results therefore reflect a system with Alienware’s control software, rather than a bare hardware configuration without its supplied software.

Airflow, temperatures, and measured noise

HotHardware describes a positive-pressure layout that draws air through the case and directs exhaust out the rear. The review configuration used two 180 mm front intake fans, bottom intakes, and a top-mounted 360 mm liquid cooler. Under the reviewer’s combined Cinebench and Cyberpunk load, the CPU reached 87°C and the GPU reached 68°C; after Cinebench was stopped, the GPU later exceeded 73°C.

At a distance of 12 inches, HotHardware measured 34–35 dBA at idle and just under 50 dBA under load. These readings belong to its sample and test conditions. Alienware’s claims, as reported by the reviewer, were up to 45% quieter on graphics-intensive tasks and 25% more airflow than any Alienware desktop launched in the prior three years. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent results established by the review’s sound measurements.

How large is the Area-51, and what can you upgrade?

The enclosure measures around 22 × 9.5 × 24 inches according to HotHardware, so it needs substantial desk or floor space. The tested machine also had rear Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C ports, front USB-C, and video outputs on its RTX 5090. Port selection depends on the graphics and motherboard components chosen, so check the exact configuration rather than assuming every AAT2250 has the same connections.

HotHardware says the system uses a standard ATX motherboard and an ATX 12VO power-supply form factor. Dell’s AAT2250 product page lists three M.2 expansion slots: one supporting up to Gen 5 and two supporting up to Gen 4. Check drive compatibility and any service implications for the specific configuration before buying an expansion drive.

There is a lighting caveat if replacing the motherboard: HotHardware says the case’s AlienFX lighting requires Dell’s AlienFX cable conversion kit to work with another ATX motherboard. Standard motherboard and PSU form factors therefore do not mean every case feature will transfer without additional hardware.

What does it cost, and how should you compare configurations?

Pricing varies by configuration and date. HotHardware’s May 2025 review is internally inconsistent about the starting price: its overview says $3,399, while its conclusion says $3,749. It lists $5,699 for the tested system. Dell’s US product page displayed $5,499.99 when accessed on September 28, 2026, with configurable options. These figures describe different contexts and should not be treated as a like-for-like price trend; verify the live listing and selected components before purchase.

For a meaningful comparison with another prebuilt or a self-build, match the systems on the work they will do and the components they include. Compare the price of equivalent CPU, GPU, memory, and storage configurations, then weigh cooling and noise under comparable tests, physical fit, warranty and service, expansion options, and the convenience of buying a ready-built system. HotHardware says its tested unit included a one-year warranty with on-site repair; check the current terms for the exact SKU and region.
