AirTrunk plans to invest an additional US$1 billion in its data-centre campus in Inzai, eastern Japan, to deploy liquid-cooling technology for AI workloads, Reuters reported on 7 October 2026. Reuters described the campus as having more than 300 megawatts of capacity. The report does not specify a completion date, customer or spending schedule.
What AirTrunk plans for its Inzai campus
Reuters reported that the additional US$1 billion investment is intended to enable AI workloads through liquid-cooling technology. The Inzai campus has traditionally supported cloud workloads, according to the report. The announced shift is about adding infrastructure suited to AI; it does not establish that the campus will stop supporting cloud workloads.
AirTrunk CEO Robin Khuda described customer interest in Japan as linked to geopolitical considerations: “Due to geopolitical reasons, we are seeing more and more customers looking to Japan from a North Asian perspective,” he told Reuters. That is the company’s explanation for customer interest, not an independently measured demand statistic.
Inzai campus capacity is not AirTrunk’s Japan-wide capacity
The more-than-300-megawatt figure applies to the Inzai campus. Separately, AirTrunk’s Japan page lists 430+ MW for its Japan operations overall and names four sites: TOK1, TOK2, OSK1 and OSK2. The two figures describe different scopes and should not be treated as competing estimates of Inzai’s capacity.

What the report does not establish
- Project timetable: Reuters did not report when the investment will be made or when liquid-cooling deployment will be completed.
- Customers: No customer for the Inzai campus or the planned AI workloads was identified.
- Spending breakdown: The report gives no detailed allocation of the additional US$1 billion.
- Company confirmation: AirTrunk’s media-release index, reviewed on 7 October 2026, listed Japan financing and Osaka development releases but no matching announcement for this Inzai investment. Reuters is therefore the source for the plan and its details.
