Airport is a VS Code extension for developers who run several AI coding agents in terminals and need to see which one needs attention—and which folder it is working in. It puts agent terminals and status indicators in a sidebar, with a Files view tied to the selected terminal’s working folder. It is distinct from a separate standalone terminal multiplexer also named Airport.

What Airport does in VS Code

Airport can launch Claude Code, Codex, Devin, Antigravity, or a plain shell in VS Code terminals. Its sidebar groups those terminals so you can switch between sessions and identify the ones that need attention. The extension listing describes the features; they are product claims, not independent performance tests. See Airport on the Visual Studio Marketplace.

Statuses at a glance

  • Needs you: The agent appears blocked on a question or permission prompt.
  • Working: The agent appears to be thinking or running a tool.
  • Done: The agent has finished its turn and is idle.

The status indicators are useful for deciding which terminal to inspect, while the Files view helps connect the selected terminal to its working folder. This addresses a practical coordination question when agents run in parallel: “Which files is this agent actually working on?”

Session and sidebar controls

The listing says you can duplicate a terminal, duplicate it with a different agent, rename its sidebar entry, and close sessions. Airport can also send operating-system notifications when a terminal needs input and offer to resume previous terminals when you reopen a workspace. It is listed as working over SSH, WSL, and GitHub Codespaces.

How Airport detects agent status

Airport does not rely on a separate, agent-specific output parser, according to its creator, Vignaesh Ram A: “Airport hooks into VS Code’s shell integration API to watch terminal output and infer agent status, rather than parsing agent-specific output formats.” The extension therefore depends on VS Code shell integration being available. If it is not, the terminal can still run, but Airport cannot show a status light. Read the creator’s account of Airport.

Requirements and supported shells

  • VS Code 1.93 or newer.
  • A shell with VS Code shell integration: bash, zsh, fish, PowerShell (pwsh), or cmd.
  • The AI coding agent you want to use must already be installed and working in a regular terminal.

These are the requirements stated in the Marketplace listing. Airport is a way to organize agent terminals; it does not install or configure the agents themselves.

Where it helps—and what it does not replace

Airport is aimed at developers who run agents across projects or workspaces and want a quick way to spot a prompt or associate a terminal with its working folder. Without a status-focused sidebar, you may need to inspect terminals one by one to tell whether an agent is waiting, still working, or idle. The Files view provides context about the selected terminal’s folder, but it is not a built-in change-review interface.

The available sources do not establish independent comparative results against tmux or other agent managers. Evaluate Airport as a VS Code extension with the specific visibility and session controls described here, rather than as a proven productivity improvement.

UGREEN USB C Hub 5 in 1 Multiport USB Adapter 4K HDMI, 100W Power Delivery
  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports

Limitations to know before relying on it

  • No built-in diff viewer. The Marketplace listing points users to VS Code’s Source Control view when the terminal’s folder is also a workspace folder. Marketplace details.
  • Sidebar renaming does not rename the VS Code tab. The listing attributes this to a VS Code API limitation.
  • Resumed terminals start without a status. After a window reload, a resumed terminal has no status until it produces new output.
  • Status depends on shell integration. A terminal can remain usable without integration, but Airport will not display its status light.
