Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you use Apple devices and want Apple’s listed hearing, health, and ecosystem features. Choose Sony WF-1000XM5 if multipoint connectivity and support for Sony’s listed audio formats matter more. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish a universal winner for sound, noise cancellation, call quality, or comfort.
At a glance: which should you choose?
| What matters most | Better fit on paper | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Apple-device features and integration | AirPods Pro 3 | Apple lists features including Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, Live Translation, and a heart-rate sensor for workouts. Some features depend on compatible devices, software, region, or language. |
| Connecting to two devices at once | Sony WF-1000XM5 | Sony lists multipoint connectivity. |
| Choice of listed audio formats | Sony WF-1000XM5 | Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. Your source device must support a format for you to use it. |
| Manufacturer-listed water and dust resistance | AirPods Pro 3 | Apple lists IP57 for the earbuds and case; Sony lists an IPX4-equivalent rating for the WF-1000XM5 earbuds. |
| Proven winner for sound, ANC, calls, or comfort | Not established | The official specifications do not provide controlled, head-to-head measurements for these qualities. |
How their features differ
AirPods Pro 3 make more sense for Apple-focused features
Apple lists Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, Live Translation, and a heart-rate sensor for workouts on AirPods Pro 3. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every country or on every connected device. Apple notes that some features require compatible hardware and current software, and availability can also depend on region or language.
AirPods Pro 3 can also be used as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple says functionality may be limited. If you plan to use them outside Apple’s ecosystem, check that the specific features you care about work with your devices before choosing them.
Sony offers multipoint and a broader listed codec set
Sony lists multipoint for WF-1000XM5, which is useful if you want the earbuds connected to two devices, such as a computer and phone. Sony also lists SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 audio formats. Those format listings do not mean that every phone, computer, app, or audio source supports all four; confirm compatibility with your source devices and software.

Battery life: manufacturer maximums, not a head-to-head test
| Model and condition | Manufacturer-listed figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3, ANC on | Up to 8 hours per charge | Apple’s technical specifications give this maximum with Active Noise Cancellation enabled. |
| AirPods Pro 3, Spatial Audio and head tracking on | Up to 7.5 hours per charge | Apple lists this maximum with both features enabled. |
| AirPods Pro 3, including charging case | Up to 24 hours with ANC on | This is a case-inclusive total, not a single-charge runtime. |
| Sony WF-1000XM5, noise canceling on | Up to 8 hours of continuous music playback | Sony’s US specifications state this maximum with noise canceling enabled. |
| Sony WF-1000XM5, noise canceling off | Up to 12 hours of continuous music playback | Sony’s US specifications state this maximum with noise canceling disabled. |
Apple’s support information says its battery testing used pre-production AirPods Pro 3 earbuds and iPhone 17 Pro units in July and August 2025; Apple also cautions that battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors. Sony’s US specifications do not state a test year for its figures. These are manufacturer-published maximums from methods not shown to be directly comparable, so they do not prove that either model lasts longer in everyday use.
Fit, included tips, and durability
Tip sizes and box contents
Apple lists silicone ear tips in XXS, XS, S, M, and L for AirPods Pro 3. Its USB-C charging cable is sold separately. Sony lists noise-isolation earbud tips and a USB cable in the WF-1000XM5 box. The supplied sizes and shapes differ, and fit depends on your ears; the specifications do not establish that generic replacement tips will fit either model.

Apple lists IP57 for AirPods Pro 3 and its charging case, while Sony lists an IPX4-equivalent rating for WF-1000XM5. These are the manufacturers’ stated ratings, not assurances for every exposure or use condition. Apple says resistance is not permanent and advises against charging the product when wet.

What the specifications cannot tell you
The Apple and Sony specification pages do not report controlled side-by-side results for noise cancellation, sound quality, microphone performance, or comfort. A feature list and an IP rating cannot establish which earbuds will sound better to you or block more noise in your commute. For those priorities, consult independent comparative testing that evaluates both models under the same conditions, or try them yourself where possible.
