AirPods Live Translation is available now, but it works only with specific AirPods and an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later. You also need Apple Intelligence enabled, the Translate app, current AirPods firmware, and downloaded language models. Apple’s “later this year” announcement was made in September 2025; it is no longer a future rollout date.
Which AirPods and iPhones support Live Translation?
Apple’s current compatibility list includes these AirPods:
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
- AirPods 5, both models
- AirPods Pro 2 and later
- AirPods Max 2
AirPods 4 without Active Noise Cancellation are not on Apple’s listed compatibility roster. Compatible AirPods alone are not sufficient. You also need an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on, the Translate app installed, and the latest AirPods firmware. How to set up and start a translation
- On your iPhone, open AirPods settings and download both the language the other person will speak and the language you want to hear.
- Open the Translate app, select Live, and choose the spoken and target languages.
- Start Live Translation from the Translate app, by asking Siri (“Siri, start Live Translation”), or with an assigned iPhone Action button. You can also use supported AirPods controls.
- For AirPods Max 2, press the listening-mode button. For the listed earbuds, press and hold both stems at once.
Apple says the language models are downloaded to the iPhone and processing takes place there. The wearer hears the other speaker translated. To reply to someone who does not have compatible AirPods, show them the translated transcript in Translate or play the translated audio through the iPhone speaker. In a noisy setting, Apple suggests moving the iPhone closer to the other speaker so its microphones can assist translation performance.

What languages and regions are supported?
Availability depends on region and language, so check Apple’s current availability information for your location and language pair before relying on the feature. Apple’s November 4, 2025 announcement about the EU expansion listed English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin Chinese in simplified and traditional forms, Japanese, and Korean for AirPods Live Translation. Apple also cautioned that some features may not be available in all regions or languages. That announcement described a 2025 rollout and should not be read as a current schedule. The title’s “later this year” wording comes from Apple’s September 15, 2025 announcement, which said Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese in simplified and traditional forms would be added by year-end. Apple later said the EU rollout had been delayed while it did additional engineering work to meet Digital Markets Act requirements, and that Live Translation would expand to the EU the following month. What to know about privacy and translation accuracy
Apple says downloaded language models run on the iPhone and conversation data remains private there. That is Apple’s description of how the feature works, not an independent security guarantee. Apple also warns: “Live Translation uses generative models, and outputs may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. Check important information for accuracy.” Treat translations as assistance, not as certified interpretation, and verify anything consequential.
