AIREAL is a 2013 research prototype that uses directed air vortices to create tactile feedback without requiring a person to wear a device or touch a surface. Its authors reported a 75-degree field of view and 8.5 cm resolution at 1 meter; those figures describe the research system, not a currently sold product.
What is AIREAL?
AIREAL is a free-air haptics system described in a 2013 SIGGRAPH paper by Rajinder Sodhi, Ivan Poupyrev, Matthew Glisson, and Ali Israr. It combines a physical air-vortex device with interactive computer graphics, with the goal of letting a person feel tactile cues associated with virtual objects, textures, or gestures in open space.
The key idea is that tactile feedback does not have to come from a wearable controller or a surface the user touches. AIREAL aims to direct a sensation through the air toward the user’s skin. The official Disney Research project page presents the work as research, not as a retail product.
How does AIREAL create tactile feedback?
- It generates an air vortex. The device produces a ring of air that can travel through open space.
- It directs the vortex. An actuated flexible nozzle steers the air toward a target area.
- The arriving air produces a sensation. As the vortex reaches skin, its pressure distribution can impart a force the person feels.
- Software connects the sensation to an interaction. In the 2013 SIGGRAPH paper, computer graphics and the directed air cue work together so feedback can correspond to virtual objects, textures, or gestures.
This is different from simply blowing air at a person: the project describes a directed vortex and an actuated nozzle as part of an interactive haptic system. The paper situates the approach alongside alternatives such as surface-based touch, wearable devices, blowing air, and ultrasound-generated pressure waves; it does not provide a current product ranking.

What performance did the AIREAL paper report?
| Measure | Reported result | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Field of view | 75 degrees | Reported by Disney Research for the AIREAL research system in 2013. |
| Spatial resolution | 8.5 cm at 1 meter | Reported by Disney Research for the AIREAL research system in 2013. |
These are prototype results from the project material, not general specifications for mid-air haptics or evidence of a device available to buy. They also should not be read as a complete measure of how strong, comfortable, or consistent the sensation would be in every setting.
What was AIREAL intended to be used for?
The project page names gaming, mobile applications, and gesture interaction as possible application areas. Those are proposed uses in a research context; the cited material does not establish that AIREAL was commercially deployed in games, phones, or other products.

- 【SATISFYING HAPTIC FEEDBACK & ASMR SOUND】Designed for sensory seekers who crave distinct auditory and tactile engagement. Every slide and roll produces crisp mechanical clicking sounds and rhythmic vibrations—mimicking the precise feel of a luxury watch or bolt-action mechanism. Ideal for ADHD focus, stress relief, autism sensory support, and replacing nervous habits like nail-biting or pen-clicking.
- 【OFFICE-READY & DISCREET ENGAGEMENT】Engineered for smooth motion with low-decibel mechanical sound, making it a perfectly discreet office fidget for quiet meetings, study, or travel. The pocket-sized design ensures instant stress relief anywhere. Note: The precision-engineered chain treads reach peak fluid performance after a short 24-hour mechanical break-in period.
- 【COOL TANK AESTHETIC - BEST EDC GIFT】Featuring a unique mini tank design with realistic moving treads, this stylish fidget slider serves as both a functional focus tool and a cool desk decoration. Packaged with a premium feel, it makes an exceptional gift for men, dads, gamers, engineers, and colleagues on Birthdays, Christmas, Father’s Day, or as stocking stuffers.
More broadly, the concept is useful for understanding one way designers have explored making virtual interactions feel tangible without asking users to wear haptic hardware. The paper demonstrates a research direction, not a ready-to-install interface for a consumer device.
Can you buy an AIREAL device?
The cited official project page and paper document research hardware and a publication, not a retail product, compatible accessory, or current purchase option. The available evidence therefore does not support treating AIREAL as a device consumers can buy. It also does not establish present-day availability beyond the project material.

How should AIREAL be compared with other haptics?
A useful research-level comparison looks at how feedback is delivered and what the source actually establishes:
- Hardware contact: Does the user need to wear a device, touch a surface, or neither?
- Feedback mechanism: Does sensation come from a directed air vortex, ultrasound-generated pressure, or another method?
- Reported working area: What distance, target area, or spatial resolution does the source report, and under what conditions?
- Evidence of availability: Is the cited system a research demonstration or a product documented as available to users?
For AIREAL, the publication describes directed air vortices and reports a resolution measure at 1 meter. It does not establish retail availability, and its figures should not be generalized to other systems.
