AirDrop is Apple’s nearby sharing feature; Quick Share covers Android-to-Windows transfers and, on selected Android phones, direct sharing to Apple devices. If your Android phone does not support that direct route, Google offers a QR-code alternative that sends an encrypted download link through the internet. The best choice depends on the devices involved and the transfer path—not on a proven speed advantage: the official guides do not provide a controlled head-to-head speed test.
AirDrop vs. Quick Share at a glance
| What matters | AirDrop | Quick Share |
|---|---|---|
| Main device scope | Nearby iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. | Android and Windows; direct reception on Apple devices is available from certain Android phones. |
| Cross-platform route | Receives direct Quick Share transfers from compatible Android devices when AirDrop visibility is set to Everyone for 10 minutes. | Can send directly to eligible Apple devices; otherwise, an Android sender can use the QR-code download workflow. |
| Connection requirements | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on for both devices. | Android-to-Windows sharing needs Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a shared network, and proximity. QR-code sharing to Apple needs internet on both ends. |
| Recipient approval | The recipient can accept or decline each incoming transfer. | The recipient approves incoming transfers; the direct Apple-device route also requires accepting the AirDrop notification. |
| Documented limits | No numeric transfer limit is stated in the cited Apple guidance. | Google’s QR workflow to Apple allows up to 10 GB per 24 hours, 1,000 files per session, and 20 Apple-device recipients at a time. |
For current setup details, see Apple’s AirDrop guide, Google’s instructions for Android-to-Windows Quick Share, and Google’s guide to Quick Share on Android, including sharing to Apple devices.
Which devices can share with each other?
AirDrop: Apple devices
AirDrop sends photos, videos, documents, and other items between nearby iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and the recipient decides whether to accept each transfer. Apple says AirDrop transfers are encrypted.
Quick Share: Android and Windows
Google documents Quick Share between Android devices and Windows PCs. Its published baseline is Android 6.0 or later and a 64-bit Windows 10 or later computer. For an ARM-based Windows computer, Google specifies Windows 11 or later. The devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, must be on the same network, and should be within 5 meters of each other.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Quick Share to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
Direct sharing from Android to an Apple device is available only on supported Android hardware. Google names Pixel 8a or later and certain devices from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola. That list does not establish compatibility for every model from those brands; check the current support information for your specific phone before relying on direct discovery.
How the cross-platform transfer works
Direct transfer from a supported Android phone
- On the Apple device, open AirDrop settings and set visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes.
- On the Android phone, choose the content to send, open Quick Share, and select the nearby Apple device.
- On the Apple device, accept the AirDrop notification to receive the files.
The temporary visibility setting is important: if the Apple device is not set to Everyone for 10 minutes, it may not appear to the Android sender.

QR-code transfer when direct sharing is unavailable
- On Android, start the QR-code sharing option in Quick Share and display the code.
- On the Apple device, scan the code and open the secure link in its browser.
- Download the shared content from the page. Both devices need internet access for this workflow.
Google says files sent this way are end-to-end encrypted, uploaded to Google’s servers, and available to download for 24 hours. The documented limits are 10 GB per 24 hours, 1,000 files per session, and 20 Apple-device recipients at a time. Mobile data charges may apply if the devices are not using Wi-Fi.
Setup and network differences
AirDrop
Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both Apple devices, and make sure the recipient’s visibility settings allow discovery. For iPhone and iPad, Apple also advises disconnecting Personal Hotspot. On devices running iOS 17 or later, bringing two devices together can be used to initiate sharing.

Quick Share between Android and Windows
In addition to Bluetooth, Google’s Windows workflow requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the same network, and nearby devices. Windows visibility settings affect whether a device can be discovered. Google notes that network or Bluetooth capabilities can also interfere with discovery.
Privacy, approval, and transfer limits
Both tools keep the recipient involved: AirDrop recipients can accept or decline, and Google says incoming Quick Share transfers require approval. Apple says AirDrop transfers are encrypted; Google says Quick Share files are encrypted. For the QR-code route to Apple devices, Google specifically describes the files as end-to-end encrypted and temporarily hosted for download.

The numeric limits in Google’s guidance apply to the QR-code workflow to Apple devices, not to every Quick Share transfer. Apple’s cited AirDrop pages do not state a comparable numeric transfer cap.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if a device does not appear
- For AirDrop: confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices, check the recipient’s visibility setting, and disconnect Personal Hotspot on iPhone or iPad if applicable.
- For Android-to-Windows Quick Share: check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the shared network, and Quick Share visibility settings. The network must permit device-to-device communication.
- If a Windows transfer is failing: Google recommends moving the devices within 30 centimeters as a troubleshooting step. This is not the stated normal operating distance; Google’s general proximity guidance is up to 5 meters.
- For direct Quick Share-to-Apple sharing: set AirDrop to Everyone for 10 minutes and accept the incoming AirDrop request.
- If direct Android-to-Apple sharing is not supported: use the QR-code workflow, provided both devices have internet access.
Is AirDrop or Quick Share faster?
The official support pages explain compatibility, setup, privacy, and—in Google’s QR-code workflow—transfer limits. They do not provide comparable controlled tests of speed or reliability. A speed ranking would therefore be unsupported; choose based on whether your devices support the route you need and whether that route’s network requirements fit your situation.
