Vrbo and Booking.com compete with Airbnb in accommodation distribution, but they are not interchangeable services—and the available company figures do not establish a universal winner or a comparable market-share ranking. For a real trip, compare the same destination, dates, guest count and property type across all three, then judge the total price and the terms attached to the specific listing.
Are Vrbo and Booking.com competitors to Airbnb?
Yes. Airbnb’s 2025 Form 10-K names Booking Holdings, which includes Booking.com, and Expedia Group, which includes Vrbo, among its online travel agency competitors. Booking Holdings also identifies Airbnb and Vrbo as competitors in accommodations. The companies compete in lodging distribution, although each has businesses beyond vacation rentals. How do the platforms compare for vacation rentals?
Their published figures describe different things, so they are useful for understanding each company’s scale and emphasis—not for ranking the platforms by market share or predicting what a traveler will find in a particular destination.

What the figures do—and do not—tell you
The three measures have different definitions, dates and units: hosts and cumulative arrivals, bookable alternative-accommodation properties, and a platform mix. They establish that all three businesses have meaningful accommodation operations, but they do not show which one has the most suitable or available rentals for your trip. Destination-specific results are more useful for that decision.

How to compare them for a specific trip
- Set identical search details. Enter the same destination, check-in and check-out dates, guest count, and property requirements on Airbnb, Vrbo and Booking.com. If you need an entire home, filter for that type rather than comparing it with a hotel room or shared accommodation.
- Compare the final displayed price. Review the total for the full stay, including any displayed taxes and fees, rather than comparing a nightly starting price. The same property or a similar one can be priced differently across platforms; evaluate the actual quote shown for your dates.
- Read the cancellation and payment terms. Check the listing’s cancellation deadline, refund conditions, payment schedule and any other booking-specific restrictions before paying. A platform-wide label such as “flexible” is not a substitute for the terms shown for that reservation.
- Compare the available properties that fit. Look at location, property type, capacity and amenities in your destination. Broad company totals cannot establish local selection, and a large platform inventory does not guarantee that a suitable rental is available for your dates.
Why fees and cancellation rules need a closer look
Airbnb fees are not directly comparable as a single percentage
Airbnb says it is transitioning home hosts to a single service-fee structure. Its official fee page says most hosts using the split-fee structure pay a 3% host fee, while most hosts using the single-fee structure pay 15.5%; exceptions apply, and guest fees vary. The percentages apply under different fee models, so they are not equivalent measures of what a guest pays. Check Airbnb’s current explanation at Airbnb’s service-fee page and compare the final booking total. These Airbnb figures do not establish Vrbo’s or Booking.com’s fees for every region, host or contract.
Cancellation terms depend on the booking
Airbnb’s home-host cancellation policy, effective October 9, 2023, describes host cancellation penalties that vary by timing and includes exceptions for valid circumstances. Separately, a guest’s refund eligibility depends on the applicable listing policy and when the guest cancels. Is Vrbo or Booking.com better than Airbnb?
There is no evidence in the published figures above for a platform-wide winner. The most useful choice is the platform that offers a suitable property for your destination and dates at an acceptable total price, with cancellation and payment terms that work for you. Compare the actual listings and booking conditions rather than treating inventory counts, host totals or accommodation mix as a verdict.
