Production voice agents need more than a speech model and a live connection: they need a transport suited to the client, turn detection matched to the conversation, explicit session-state handling, and event-level observability. The OpenAI Realtime API documents WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP interfaces, plus server-side and semantic voice activity detection (VAD). It does not establish a universally fastest transport or a universal end-to-end latency target, so measure the complete experience on the stack and workload you intend to ship.
Start with the conversation path, not a latency claim
A useful way to design a realtime voice agent is to follow one conversational turn from capture to playback:
- Capture and send: the client captures the speaker’s audio and sends it over the selected realtime interface.
- Detect the turn boundary: the service determines when the speaker has stopped or finished speaking.
- Generate a response: the model processes the turn and begins producing output.
- Play and manage output: the client receives audio, starts playback, and handles completion, interruption, or a cleared buffer.
This sequence is an implementation framework, not a latency benchmark prescribed by the API reference. It helps locate delay: a slow first response may come from capture or network transport, a conservative turn boundary, model response time, or client playback. Instrument these stages separately instead of treating “voice latency” as one unexplained number.
Choose a transport for the client and connection
The Realtime API documentation lists WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP for realtime communication. It also describes native speech-to-speech interaction and text, image, and audio inputs and outputs. Those capabilities make the interfaces relevant starting points, but the reference does not rank them or provide an apples-to-apples transport benchmark.

Choose based on the client and calling environment you need to support, then validate behavior under the network conditions your users actually encounter. Do not infer that WebSocket is automatically the best choice just because it appears in this article’s title, or that any listed interface is fastest in every deployment.
- WebRTC: an interface documented for realtime communication; assess it against the clients and connection requirements in your product.
- WebSocket: another documented realtime interface; evaluate it in the same target environment rather than assuming it has a universal latency advantage.
- SIP: a documented interface to consider when the application’s calling environment calls for it.
For each candidate, test connection setup, audio delivery, recovery behavior, and perceived responsiveness using the same workload. Record the chosen interface and test conditions alongside results so a number from one client, region, or network is not mistaken for a general transport property.
Match turn detection to how people speak
Turn detection decides when an agent should respond. A boundary that arrives too late makes the agent feel sluggish; one that arrives too early can cut off a pause or a speaker who is still forming a thought. The API reference describes two server-side approaches with different behavior.

Server VAD: detect speech activity from volume
Server VAD uses audio volume to identify speech activity and turns off after silence. This gives the system a signal based on whether speech is present, but a pause does not necessarily mean the person has finished their thought. Tune and test it against the pause patterns, speaking styles, and interruption expectations of your product.
Semantic VAD: estimate whether the speaker is finished
Semantic VAD uses a turn-detection model to estimate whether a person has finished speaking, and dynamically sets a timeout based on that estimate. It may better accommodate trailing-off speech and natural conversational pauses, but the API reference warns that it may have higher latency. Treat that as a product tradeoff: a more natural decision about turn completion can cost responsiveness, and the documentation does not quantify the difference for a particular workload.
Compare the modes using real conversational cases, not only clean, short utterances. Include brief pauses, trailing speech, long turns, interruptions, and cases where the speaker resumes after silence. Track both whether the agent waited or responded appropriately and how long it took to begin responding.

Configure sessions as stateful interactions
Realtime sessions can be updated with session.update for supported configuration fields. The server returns session.updated with the effective configuration. Treat that confirmation as the source of truth for what the session is using; do not assume a requested change took effect merely because the client sent it.
Voice and model changes have lifecycle constraints and cannot be handled like ordinary fields. In particular, the client reference says the voice may be changed only before audio output has occurred. Design setup and transitions around those constraints: decide when session settings are established, listen for the server’s confirmation, and make configuration failures visible to operators rather than silently continuing with an assumed state.

session.update. - Handle the corresponding
session.updatedevent and retain the effective configuration for the active session. - Surface errors or unexpected effective settings in logs and operational monitoring.
- Apply voice and model changes only in ways permitted by the session lifecycle, including changing the voice before any audio output if a voice change is needed.
Build an event loop around audio lifecycle and recovery
A robust client must process more than incoming audio. The server-events reference describes recoverable errors and recommends monitoring and logging error messages by default. It also documents output audio buffer events that indicate started, stopped, and cleared states. A cleared buffer can correspond to an interruption or a client-initiated cutoff, so it is a useful signal for understanding what happened to a response.

Handle these events as part of the conversation state machine. Keep enough context to associate errors and audio events with the active session and turn, and distinguish a response that completed from one that was stopped or cleared. The API reference does not prescribe a full telemetry schema; the following is a practical starting set of signals to capture:
- Session configuration requested and the effective settings reported by
session.updated. - Error messages and the relevant session or turn context.
- When output audio starts, stops, or is cleared.
- Whether a clear followed an interruption or a client action, where the client can determine that distinction.
- Timestamps for capture, turn detection, response start, first playback, completion, and interruption handling.
Most server errors are described as recoverable, not harmless. Log and monitor them, then make recovery behavior explicit in the client. Avoid treating every error as a reason to discard the session, but do not hide repeated errors or assume that a recoverable error had no effect on the user’s turn.

The API reference supports qualitative guidance, not a universal millisecond target or comparable end-to-end benchmark. Semantic VAD may have higher latency than volume-based server VAD. The reference also notes that supplying the input language in ISO-639-1 format can improve accuracy and latency. These are directional statements, not quantified guarantees for every language, model, network, or application.

For an engineering measurement, define timestamps at each stage rather than reporting a single opaque latency figure:
- Input capture: when the client begins capturing the relevant speech.
- Input delivery: when audio has been sent to the realtime service.
- Turn end: when the system determines that the speaker’s turn is complete.
- Response start: when the service begins producing the response.
- First playback: when the user can hear the first response audio.
- Interruption response: when output is stopped or cleared after an interruption or client cutoff.
Report the measurement method, client and transport, network region, model or service version, audio format, and workload with any published result. Include distributions and conversational outcomes where appropriate; a single average can conceal slow turns or interruptions that feel broken. The source material does not establish a provider-neutral target, so set product thresholds from user expectations and measurements on the intended deployment.
