Within those limits, select a duration and resolution. These settings are often linked: a model may offer a higher resolution only for certain clip lengths, and its aspect-ratio options may differ between text-to-video and image-to-video.
What the four AI video settings control
Resolution: output size or quality tier
Resolution describes the video’s pixel dimensions, such as 1280×720, or a named tier such as 720p or 1080p. A higher tier means more output pixels, but it does not guarantee that every duration or mode is available at that tier. Some generators offer a set of dimensions that changes with the chosen aspect ratio.
Frame rate: playback cadence
Frame rate is the number of frames shown per second, measured in frames per second (fps). It affects how motion is presented, but the available choice is model-specific. For example, Google documents Veo 3.1 through its Gemini API at 24 fps, while Runway lists 24 or 25 fps for Gen-4.5 in advanced settings. Those options should not be assumed for other models.
Duration: the length of one clip
Duration is how long a generated clip runs. It may be a fixed choice or a range, and it can be tied to resolution: a model may allow its highest tier only for particular clip lengths.

Aspect ratio: the shape of the frame
Aspect ratio compares a frame’s width with its height. Common shapes include landscape 16:9, portrait 9:16, and square 1:1. The right shape depends on the destination and the content: a vertical frame suits a portrait-oriented placement, while a widescreen frame suits a landscape display. A ratio change can also alter how an input image fits, so check for cropping before generating.
How to choose settings without running into model limits
- Choose the destination frame shape. Decide whether the finished clip needs to be landscape, portrait, square, or another ratio. If you are animating an image, compare its shape with the intended output.
- Check the selected model and mode. Look up the controls for the exact model and whether you are using text-to-video or image-to-video. Menus can differ between modes, even within the same model.
- Set duration within the available range. Choose a clip length that fits the use, then confirm that the desired resolution is supported at that length.
- Choose a supported resolution and frame rate. Treat these as model-specific options, not universal standards. If a menu does not offer a value, the chosen model or mode may not support it.
- Review the generated output and any upscale separately. Confirm the native dimensions first. An optional upscaling step is a separate part of some workflows and does not mean the model generated the clip natively at that larger resolution.

The following are vendor-published specifications for named products and access paths, not independent quality benchmarks. Product controls can change, so consult the official documentation for the version and mode you are using.

Aspect-ratio changes can crop an input image
If an input image and output frame have different shapes, the image may need to be resized or cropped to fill the frame. Runway says Gen-4.5’s default ratio accommodates the input image, but selecting a different ratio may crop it. Its API input documentation also warns that assets that do not match a specified ratio may be center-cropped. Behavior can differ across products, so inspect the preview or output rather than assuming that every generator handles a mismatch the same way.
Before generating from a still image, check whether the subject is close to the edges. A crop can remove important details even when the selected ratio is correct for the final destination. Runway’s guidance on Gen-4.5 ratios and API inputs describes these product-specific behaviors.

Native generation resolution is different from upscaling
Native resolution is the size at which the generator creates the clip. Upscaling is a later operation that increases the output dimensions; it is not evidence that the model generated the original clip at that larger size.
In Runway’s workflow, generated video is 720p, with an optional upscale to 4K. Runway says upscaling retains the clip’s length, frame rate, and aspect ratio. It also notes that a 16:9 upscale from 720p or 1080p returns 4096×2304, which is slightly wider than 3840×2160; exact UHD delivery may require resizing in an editor. These are Runway-specific workflow details, not a universal rule for AI video tools. See Runway’s resolution guidance and upscaling documentation.
