Many projects benefit from both: generate or transform specific material, then finish it in an editing timeline. The right choice depends on your source footage, required shot control, delivery specifications, continuity needs, hardware, and tolerance for iteration—not on a universal claim that one workflow is faster or cheaper.
What each workflow does
AI video generation creates source material
Generative video tools can make clips from text prompts or reference images. For example, Runway’s Gen-4.5 documentation lists text-to-video and image-to-video generation, with clips of 2–10 seconds, 720p output, 24 or 25 frames per second, and a listed cost of 12 credits per second. These are vendor specifications, not independent measurements of quality. Traditional editing shapes recorded footage
A timeline editor is the natural place to review interviews, event recordings, demonstrations, and other captured moments; choose the usable sections; set their order and timing; and build the finished sequence. Editing also brings the separate parts of a project—picture, sound, captions, and pacing—together for delivery.

There is no controlled, independent head-to-head result here establishing a general winner for speed, cost, or quality. Compare workflows against the specific shots and delivery requirements your project actually has.

Check delivery limits before generating
Clip duration, resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and final export requirements can determine whether generated material is usable. Runway lists Gen-4.5 clips at 2–10 seconds and 720p, at 24 or 25 fps; verify the current product modes against your intended delivery format before building a sequence around them. The listed 12-credit-per-second rate is a product cost specification, not a complete estimate of project cost: retries and the provider’s current credit plan also matter. AI tools can also work inside an editing environment. Adobe’s Premiere beta Generative Media Tool documentation, last updated July 20, 2026, describes generating video and sound effects in the timeline, selecting Adobe Firefly or supported partner models, using sequence frames as references, regenerating media, and retaining results as editable clips. Use AI to transform footage when that is the actual task
Generation is not limited to making a new clip from a prompt. Runway’s Edit Studio documentation describes changing backgrounds, removing or inserting objects, restyling shots, and adding effects to existing or generated footage. The vendor lists sequences up to 30 seconds, a maximum input resolution of 1080p, a maximum input frame rate of 30 fps, and a cost of 28 credits per second with a 56-credit minimum. Account for the editing workstation
Local editing software has its own hardware and media-storage requirements. For Adobe Premiere 25.x, Adobe lists 8 GB RAM as the minimum, recommends 16 GB for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher, and recommends an additional high-speed drive for media. These are Premiere-specific requirements, not universal requirements for all editors or cloud-based generation services. Adobe Premiere Pro system requirements

A practical hybrid workflow
- Assemble the real material first. If the story relies on recorded people, events, or demonstrations, identify the usable footage and establish the edit around it.
- Mark the missing shot. Use generation for a specific visual gap, concept, or insert rather than expecting a prompt to deliver the whole finished project.
- Check the generated clip against delivery needs. Confirm duration, resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, continuity, and whether the shot matches the surrounding material.
- Transform only where useful. If existing footage needs a background, object, style, or effects change, evaluate a transformation workflow against that need.
- Finish in the timeline. Set pacing and sequence, refine the sound, add captions, and prepare the final output in an editor.
- Budget for attempts. Credit-based generation rates do not tell you the total project cost; allow for retries and check the provider’s current plan and terms.
Adobe also announced Premiere Pro’s Generative Extend as generally available on April 2, 2025, including 4K and vertical-video extension and audio-clip extension.
