Neither AI tutoring nor instructor office hours is universally better—and studies have not directly compared the two. For a course-specific question, assignment feedback, or advice about what an instructor expects, start with office hours or course staff. For an on-demand explanation or low-stakes practice, an AI tutor can be convenient if your course permits it and you verify its answers. Used together, they can fill different needs.

When should you ask an AI tutor, and when should you go to office hours?

Your need Better first step Why
A quick explanation or another example of a concept AI tutor, if your course allows it It may be available on demand and can rephrase material. Check the explanation against your course resources; a confident answer is not necessarily correct.
Flashcards, retrieval practice, or a self-quiz AI tutor, if allowed It can generate practice. Work through the questions yourself rather than copying a finished answer.
Interpreting an assignment, understanding a grade, or clarifying course expectations Instructor office hours or course staff They can respond with context about the course, assignment, and instructor’s expectations.
Academic advising, course planning, or professional development Office hours or the appropriate adviser These are recognized uses of faculty office hours at the University of Florida; an AI tool cannot give authoritative institutional advice. University of Florida office-hours guidance.
An AI answer conflicts with your lecture notes or textbook Office hours or another authoritative course resource Check the discrepancy before relying on the AI answer.
You are unsure whether AI is permitted Check the syllabus or ask the instructor first Rules differ by institution, course, assignment, and exam. Columbia University’s AI policy illustrates why students should check course-specific expectations.

Office hours are a predictable way to seek clarification, feedback, and guidance, but their format and access vary by course and academic unit. A visit is not necessarily private, one-to-one, immediately available, or equally useful in every case. The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee describes office hours as a source of academic support, guidance, and mentorship, and its policy directs instructors to maintain predictable weekly availability. Read the UWM office-hours policy.

AI can help with practice, but it does not know your instructor’s unstated expectations or replace authoritative advising. The University of Virginia identifies concept explanations, question-and-feedback practice, and virtual flashcards as possible study uses—not as a guarantee of accurate feedback. Its guidance warns that AI can produce misleading, biased, or false information, misattribute material, or fabricate sources. It also advises checking claims against reliable sources such as course materials and avoiding the disclosure of sensitive, personal, or proprietary information. University of Virginia guidance on AI in coursework.

What does the evidence say about AI tutoring?

There is no direct head-to-head study in the evidence reviewed that randomized college students between AI tutoring and instructor office hours. The results instead concern different AI tools, teaching designs, courses, comparison groups, and levels of student use. They do not establish a universal winner.

A promising result from a custom physics tutor

A 2025 randomized controlled experiment by Harvard University researchers involved 194 undergraduate students in a physics course. The authors reported that students learned significantly more in less time with a custom AI-powered tutor than in the active-learning classroom condition. The tutor was designed to apply pedagogical best practices. This is evidence about that tutor and study context—not proof that any public chatbot outperforms professors or office hours. Harvard study report.

A cautionary result from a course-integrated tutor

A 2026 University of Maryland randomized trial involved 2,379 undergraduates and 30 instructors across multiple disciplines at a large public university during fall 2025. In a comparison of sections of the same courses, the working-paper page reports that access to its course-integrated tutor reduced final grades by 0.37 standard deviations and learning-management-system participation by 0.90 standard deviations. The university’s summary translates the grade difference to around four percentage points and says about 15% of students offered the tool used it. These findings describe one implementation and adoption context; they do not show that all AI tutors harm learning. The working paper says the findings do not establish that purpose-built AI tutoring tools are not beneficial. University of Maryland working paper; University summary of the trial and usage.

How students used that tutor matters

In the Maryland study, nearly 74% of tutor requests sought information, explanations, or solutions; around 11% involved practice or test preparation; and fewer than 1% asked for feedback on a student’s own attempt. Most instructors kept the default direct-instruction setting. Those patterns show why a tool’s “tutor” label alone does not establish how students used it as a tutor. The figures describe requests in this trial, not AI tutoring use across colleges. University of Maryland summary of the trial and usage.

An early chatbot trial found no significant effect

A 2026 semester-long randomized field experiment summarized by the study authors examined a generative-AI chatbot among approximately 500 undergraduates in in-person and asynchronous online contexts. The report found no statistically significant effect on measured interest, self-efficacy, engagement, or academic achievement. That is an early result for the tested chatbot and contexts, not a verdict on every AI tutor. Computers in Human Behavior Reports study.

Older intelligent tutoring research is not a test of current chatbots

A 2014 meta-analysis indexed by ERIC covered 39 studies involving 22 intelligent tutoring systems in higher education. It reported a moderate positive overall learning effect, with a reported range of g = 0.32 to g = 0.37. The evaluated systems were less effective than human tutoring, while outperforming several other comparison conditions. These systems are not the same as today’s generative-AI chatbots, so the results provide historical context rather than a direct answer about current tools or office hours. ERIC record for the 2014 meta-analysis.

How to use both without letting AI do the learning for you

A practical sequence is to attempt the problem yourself, use an allowed AI tool for hints or a quiz rather than a complete solution, check its claims against course materials, and take unresolved or course-specific questions to office hours. This is a study suggestion based on the different functions and cautions above, not a trial-tested protocol.

  1. Try first. Write down your approach or identify exactly which step you do not understand.
  2. Ask for support, not a substitute answer. If permitted, request a hint, a differently worded explanation, or practice questions. Try solving them before looking at any answer.
  3. Verify. Compare factual and course-related claims with your textbook, lecture notes, or other reliable course materials.
  4. Bring the remaining question to course staff. Share your attempt and identify where you got stuck; ask about course-specific expectations when relevant.

How to make office hours useful

Office hours can reinforce class learning and provide a place to discuss course performance, academic advising, course or program selection, and professional development, according to the University of Florida. The university notes that formats and requirements vary by course and academic unit. University of Florida office-hours guidance.

  • Bring the assignment, problem, or notes you are asking about.
  • Show what you tried and point to the step or instruction that is unclear.
  • Ask a focused question, such as what you misunderstood or how to prioritize studying.
  • Check the course page for the instructor’s office-hours format and schedule; ask about another route to support if you cannot attend.

If you cannot attend, that does not make an AI chatbot equivalent to office hours. A University of Colorado Boulder teaching resource poses the question of whether AI can answer questions for students who lack availability to attend, reflecting an access concern rather than evidence that the options provide the same support.
