Use an AI travel planner to explore ideas and draft an itinerary; use a booking site or travel provider to compare live offers, check transaction terms, and make the reservation. Some AI tools now connect to partner booking services, so the key question is not just which interface you use, but which merchant takes payment and is responsible for your booking.
What is the difference between an AI travel planner and a booking site?
An AI travel planner helps turn preferences into suggestions: possible destinations, a day-by-day outline, or options that fit your budget and pace. A booking site or travel provider presents specific flights, rooms, activities, or other inventory and the terms for buying them. A suggested itinerary is not a reservation, and an option surfaced by AI is not necessarily a current price or confirmed booking.
The boundary is getting less clear. Google’s Canvas, announced on November 17, 2025, was described as combining Search information about flights and hotels with Maps details and web information, then letting users refine a travel plan with follow-up prompts. Google said Canvas travel planning was available on desktop in the US to users opted into the AI Mode Labs experiment at that time; that dated announcement is not a guarantee of access now. Gemini Help says users can request travel assistance using public Google Flights and Google Hotels information, including real-time flight details and hotel searches. The help page says users must be signed in with Gemini Apps Activity on; it also excludes Live chats and Gemini in Google Messages. Device, language, settings, and location availability can change, so check Gemini’s current travel-assistance help for your account and region.

Which one should you use at each stage?

For early research, an AI planner is usually the more flexible starting point. For committing money, use the provider’s live offer and confirm the merchant and terms. If an AI interface offers booking, treat that as a connection to a transaction—not proof that the AI company itself is the seller.
Can AI book your hotel or flight?
Some AI interfaces now connect travelers to booking partners, but capability and access vary by product and location. Google’s announcement described hotel booking in AI Mode rolling out in the US in English through partners including Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. It also described flight-price alerts and the ability to view points or miles rates. Rollouts and partner coverage can change; consult Google’s AI Mode travel announcement and the current help information rather than assuming a feature is available to you.

Google’s support page says AI Mode hotel reservations are currently available in the US, in English. Its documented flow asks travelers to select a property and room type, inspect amenities and refundable status, and confirm the hotel, dates, guests, and total price. The merchant processes payment, sends confirmation, and handles changes, cancellations, and refund requests under its own terms; Google says it is not a party to the booking transaction. That merchant distinction matters if plans change. Before paying, find the name of the company that will appear as seller or payment recipient, and save the confirmation and the provider’s cancellation terms. An AI interface can help you reach an offer, but the merchant’s rules govern the reservation.

How to plan a trip with AI without trusting it blindly
- Give the planner useful constraints. State the dates or date range, budget range, preferred pace, interests, and hard requirements. Include accessibility information only when it is relevant to the recommendations you need.
- Ask for a draft, not a guarantee. Request a proposed itinerary with locations and the assumptions behind it. Treat opening hours, transit times, entry requirements, and availability as details to verify with official or provider sources; the reviewed product information does not establish that any one planner reliably verifies every time-sensitive detail.
- Check current options. Compare date-specific flights and lodging in live search results or directly with providers. Gemini can surface public Google Flights and Hotels information, but inspect the actual listing, inclusions, and conditions before deciding.
- Verify the transaction before payment. Confirm the merchant, dates, passenger or guest details, room or fare class, full price, cancellation or refund conditions, and where confirmation will arrive.
- Limit what you share. Provide only the information needed for the task and check the AI service’s privacy terms. Expedia’s AI terms specifically advise against entering sensitive personal details unless strictly necessary.
What are the risks of relying on AI travel recommendations?
Suggestions can be inaccurate or out of date
AI-generated recommendations are not a substitute for checking an offer or destination detail at its source. Expedia’s terms for its AI tools—including Property Q&A, AI Compare, and Activity Planner—say outputs are machine-generated, may draw on public information Expedia has not verified, and can be unexpected or inaccurate. Expedia also says recommendations are subject to availability and directs users to inspect the relevant property or activity page before booking. Its terms are at Expedia’s AI terms.
The recommendation may not be the transaction
A planner may link to an outside service or surface a partner offer. Check which company is selling the room or fare and whose terms apply. This is especially important when you expect the AI platform to handle support: in Google’s documented AI Mode hotel flow, the merchant—not Google—handles customer service, changes, cancellations, and refund requests.

Prompts can reveal personal information
Travel prompts may contain dates, location, companions, or other personal details. Expedia’s AI terms say information entered may be processed to operate its tools and for other stated purposes, and caution users not to share sensitive personal details unless strictly necessary. Other products have their own terms, so do not assume one provider’s privacy practices apply to another.

These commissioned survey responses are consistent with a practical distinction: people may welcome AI for ideas while wanting a familiar travel brand for a transaction. Expedia Group Chief AI & Data Officer Xavi Amatriain summarized the company’s interpretation as: “Travelers don’t have a technology problem with AI. They have a trust problem.” That is the view of an executive at the survey’s sponsor, not an independent conclusion.
