An AI text watermark is a signal deliberately introduced while a system generates text; a post-hoc AI detector examines finished text and estimates whether it resembles AI-generated writing. A watermark checker looks for a particular supported signal, while a general detector can assess text without a watermark—but its result is an uncertain classification, not proof of who wrote the text.
How are watermarks and AI detectors different?
| Approach | When it acts | What it looks for | What a result can establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text watermarking | During generation | A pattern created by a known watermark method in the generator’s wording choices | Whether a compatible checker found evidence of that supported mark |
| Post-hoc AI detection | After text exists | Patterns or characteristics associated with AI-generated text by the detector’s method | A tool-specific estimate about the text; not proof of its author |
The terms are related but not interchangeable. Watermarking is one provenance technique; “AI detector” is a broader label that can include systems checking for a watermark as well as systems that classify text after the fact. A post-hoc detector does not need the generator to have added a watermark.
How does a text watermark work?
In a common design, a language model can choose among several plausible next tokens or word pieces. A watermarking method subtly structures or biases those choices so that a statistical pattern accumulates across the passage. A compatible detector tests whether the pattern fits a known watermark configuration.
The signal is carried in the generated wording choices; it need not be hidden characters or metadata. OpenAI’s description of textGrain, for example, says it does not add invisible spaces, hidden characters, or unusual punctuation. Google’s SynthID Text documentation describes a generation configuration that activates a logits processor and says no additional model training is required.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A watermark is therefore not a universal stamp that every AI service automatically adds. It depends on a provider or system implementing a method and on a checker that supports that method.
How does a post-hoc AI detector work?
A post-hoc detector analyzes the finished passage without requiring a particular watermark. It estimates whether the text matches patterns its model or method associates with AI generation. That estimate depends on the detector, its validation data, and the kind of text being assessed.

NIST’s 2025 text-to-text pilot evaluated generation and discrimination separately using curated groups of articles and human- and machine-generated summaries. Its results showed meaningful variation: some generators could deceive most tested discriminators, while some discriminators detected text from almost all tested generators. Performance also improved across testing rounds. NIST did not report one accuracy figure that applies to all detectors or all writing.
Consequently, a score from one detector should not be treated as a universal probability of authorship or compared directly with another tool’s score unless the tools establish that their scales are comparable.

What do positive and negative results mean?
If a watermark checker finds a mark
A positive result means the checker found evidence consistent with a watermark it supports. It does not by itself identify the person who generated, edited, submitted, or intended the text. It also does not establish that the content is accurate, unedited, legally owned by a particular person, or presented in its original context.
If a watermark checker finds no mark
No mark detected does not mean the text was written by a person. The generator may not have used that watermark, the checker may not support the relevant scheme, or editing and other transformations may have weakened the signal. Absence of a detected watermark is not a general “human-written” certificate.

If a post-hoc detector gives a score
Read the result as that tool’s assessment under its own method, not as conclusive attribution. Before relying on it, check which languages, text types, generators, and transformations were represented in its validation and how it accounts for false positives and false negatives.
What can make either approach less reliable?
- Short passages: There may be too little text for a reliable statistical signal or classification. OpenAI says short text often lacks enough material for reliable watermark detection.
- Restricted wording choices: Code, math, exact reproductions, and tightly constrained factual answers leave less freedom to vary wording while preserving correctness. OpenAI notes that code is harder to watermark.
- Editing, paraphrasing, or translation: Google says SynthID Text can withstand some cropping, small wording changes, and mild paraphrasing, but thorough rewriting or translation can substantially reduce detector confidence. The SynthID-Text paper also notes that paraphrasing with a language model weakens generative watermarks.
- Unsupported providers or schemes: A watermark checker only tests signals it knows how to detect. Watermarking therefore cannot cover outputs from providers that do not implement a compatible method.
- Attempts to attack the signal: The SynthID-Text paper identifies watermark stealing, spoofing, and scrubbing as ongoing research concerns. A watermark should not be treated as a tamper-proof forensic signature.
For context, OpenAI’s help documentation says the EU AI Act Code of Practice does not require marks for outputs under 200 tokens (about 150 English words) or for code snippets. That is the cited Code of Practice’s stated scope, not a universal technical cutoff for every watermark or detector.

Can an AI detector tell if ChatGPT wrote a passage?
A general detector may estimate whether a passage resembles AI-generated text, but that estimate alone cannot establish that ChatGPT—or any particular person or service—wrote it. A watermark checker can support a narrower conclusion only if the text carries a mark from a scheme the checker supports. Neither approach, by itself, settles authorship or intent.
How do current provider examples fit?
Google SynthID Text
Google’s developer documentation describes SynthID Text as an implementation for Transformers with a probabilistic detector. The documentation gives three possible outcomes: watermarked, not watermarked, or uncertain. It also says thresholds can be tuned to target false-positive and false-negative rates. The page was last updated April 9, 2025.
Google SynthID Detector portal
Google announced a portal on May 20, 2025, for scanning text and other supported media for SynthID, with likely marked portions highlighted. The announcement described access as initially rolling out to early testers, so current availability should be checked with Google.
OpenAI textGrain
OpenAI’s help documentation describes its text watermarking method and says text-detector access is limited to qualifying research and academic organizations, with applications reviewed case by case. Access terms can change. These provider examples are specific methods and access arrangements, not evidence that every AI service marks text or that one provider’s checker detects all AI writing.
Which approach should you use?
- To check for a known provider’s mark: Use a checker that explicitly supports that watermark. Report the outcome as a supported mark detected, not proof that a named person authored the passage.
- When no watermark can be assumed: A post-hoc detector may offer a probabilistic signal. Review its tested languages, generators, text lengths, and handling of edited text, along with its false-positive and false-negative behavior.
- Before making a consequential decision about a person: Do not rely on either result alone. Use additional evidence and a review process; the cited evaluations and provider documentation do not support treating either kind of result as standalone proof.
Watermarks and post-hoc detectors can complement one another: a watermark can help identify outputs from participating providers, while post-hoc methods may assess text from generators that do not implement one. As the SynthID-Text paper puts it, generative watermarks “do not offer a complete solution to artificial-intelligence text detection; rather they are complementary to other approaches.”
