AI-related stocks and bonds expose investors to different risks: stocks represent ownership in companies whose results and share prices depend on business performance and expectations, while bonds are debt claims that depend on an issuer’s ability to meet contractual payments. Neither label guarantees safety or diversification. What matters is what a portfolio actually owns, how those holdings are priced, and how they may respond to changing conditions.

What are you comparing: an equity theme or a debt investment?

“AI stocks” is a broad description, not a uniform asset class. It can refer to companies developing AI, firms supplying chips or data-center infrastructure, or businesses expected to use AI. Their shares are still equities: shareholders have an ownership claim, and returns depend on company performance and investor expectations. A thematic fund can hold several such companies, but its label alone does not tell you how concentrated it is.

A bond is a debt security. The issuer promises interest and repayment of principal under specified terms, but those payments depend on the issuer’s ability to pay and the bond’s conditions. Government securities, investment-grade corporate bonds, and speculative-grade or high-yield corporate bonds have materially different risk profiles.

Stocks generally have more volatility and growth potential than bonds; bonds generally offer more modest returns. The SEC’s investor guide also notes that large-company stocks, as a group, have historically lost money on average about one out of every three years. That is a historical generalization in the guide, not a forecast or a guarantee about any particular stock.

Where AI-related stocks can lose value

Company performance and execution

A company can fall short because demand, competition, margins, regulation, or execution turns out worse than expected. An AI-related business may also spend heavily on computing capacity or other infrastructure without earning returns that justify the investment. A promising technology does not ensure that every company associated with it will profit.

Valuation and expectations

A share price reflects expectations as well as current results. If investors have priced in rapid adoption or high future earnings, a business can continue growing and still see its shares fall if growth, margins, or returns on investment disappoint relative to those expectations. Higher discount rates can also weigh on valuations, particularly where much of the expected value rests on future growth. The effect varies by company and market.

In its May 2026 Financial Stability Report, the Federal Reserve reported that surveyed market contacts raised concerns about AI-related equity valuations, debt-financed capital spending, and labor-market effects. Some respondents saw AI valuation concerns as a possible trigger for a correction in risk assets. The report explicitly says the survey summary does not represent the views of the Federal Reserve Board or the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It describes views collected from 20 contacts in March and April 2026, not a central-bank prediction or a consensus probability.

Concentration and disruption

A portfolio with a few AI-linked companies, or a thematic fund dominated by a few holdings, can be exposed to company-specific setbacks as well as broader technology-sector sentiment. The category can also contain very different businesses, so the risks of one AI-related company should not be generalized to all the others.

In remarks on May 27, 2026, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook discussed risks from AI-driven algorithmic trading, AI disruption to speculative-grade technology bonds, and debt issuance to finance AI infrastructure. These were a policymaker’s analysis of possible risks, not a prediction that they will occur.

What risks bonds still have

Credit and default risk

A bond issuer may be unable to make interest payments or repay principal. Credit quality matters: a Treasury security and a speculative-grade corporate bond are not interchangeable simply because both are bonds. Corporate bonds can also share business or sector risks with stocks. If AI changes a technology company’s prospects or ability to repay debt, its bonds may be affected as well as its shares.

Interest-rate risk

When market rates rise, the price of an existing fixed-rate bond typically falls, because newer bonds may offer more attractive payments. The price impact depends in part on the bond’s maturity and rate sensitivity. An investor who sells before maturity may realize a loss; holding to maturity does not remove credit risk, inflation risk, or the opportunity cost of being locked into a lower rate.

Inflation risk

Inflation can reduce the purchasing power of a bond’s fixed nominal payments. Inflation-linked securities have different mechanics, but neither ordinary bonds nor equities should be treated as a guaranteed inflation hedge. Companies with pricing power or growth may sometimes fare better in inflationary conditions, but that outcome is not assured.

Liquidity and call risk

A bond may be difficult to sell quickly at a fair price, particularly in less liquid markets. Some bonds can be called, meaning the issuer may repay them earlier than their stated maturity under the terms of the issue. A call can limit the time an investor receives a bond’s stated payments and may force reinvestment under different conditions.

High-yield bonds are not a simple safe alternative

High-yield bonds generally involve greater credit risk than higher-quality bonds. Their prices can fall when investors become concerned about defaults or corporate prospects, so they may not provide the same diversification that an investor expects from high-quality government or corporate debt.

Can bonds protect a portfolio if AI stocks fall?

Bonds can diversify equity exposure, but they are not a guaranteed hedge. Their performance depends on why stocks are falling and on the bond holdings themselves. For example, a selloff driven by rising rates may also pressure fixed-rate bond prices. If concern about an AI company’s finances spreads to its corporate debt, owning its shares and bonds may leave a portfolio exposed to the same issuer. Broader market stress can affect multiple asset types at once.

Diversification works both across and within asset classes. A narrow AI fund may leave a portfolio concentrated, while several funds can still overlap in their largest holdings. A bond fund’s label also does not establish its credit quality, rate sensitivity, or issuer concentration. Check underlying holdings rather than counting funds or relying on category names.

Vanguard Investment Strategy Group’s 2026 outlook projected around 4% returns over the coming decade for high-quality U.S. bonds. This is Vanguard’s projection, not a guaranteed outcome or a forecast for all bonds. Vanguard also reported that the U.S. CAPE ratio was about 37 as of November 19, 2025, placing it in the top 10% of valuation observations since 1988. That is a dated valuation calculation, not an October 2026 market quote and not evidence that a decline must follow.

A checklist for comparing the exposures in a portfolio

Before deciding whether a mix of AI-related equities and bonds is diversified, examine the investments and the role each is meant to play:

  • Goal and time horizon: Consider when the money may be needed and how much fluctuation the investor can tolerate. The appropriate mix depends on both, as well as the goal.
  • Equity concentration: Identify individual AI-related companies, the fund’s top holdings, and how much exposure rests on a few businesses or one sector.
  • Overlap: Compare holdings across funds. Multiple funds may own many of the same large companies, creating less diversification than their count suggests.
  • Bond issuer and credit quality: Distinguish government securities, investment-grade corporate debt, and high-yield debt; check whether bond issuers overlap with stock holdings.
  • Maturity and rate sensitivity: Review maturity or duration information for bonds and bond funds, since rate changes can affect their market values.
  • Income and terms: Understand whether payments are contractual, what could interrupt them, and whether a bond has call provisions.
  • Inflation exposure: Consider how fixed nominal payments may lose purchasing power and whether any inflation-linked holdings have different terms.
  • Rebalancing policy: Asset values change at different rates, so an allocation can drift from its intended risk mix. Rebalancing is the process of bringing it back toward that mix; the method and timing depend on the investor’s plan.

How to use the comparison

“AI stocks versus bonds” is not a choice between a single risky asset and a single safe one. It is a comparison between particular equity exposures and particular debt claims, each with its own valuation, concentration, issuer, and market risks. Evaluate the actual holdings and how they might behave under plausible scenarios; no allocation is right for every investor, and holding both does not ensure protection against losses.
