Stellar Cyber, Darktrace, and Microsoft Sentinel all support security operations, but they are not interchangeable products. Stellar Cyber documents several deployment patterns, including SIEM replacement, SIEM coexistence, and NDR-first use. Darktrace positions its platform around AI-based detection and response across multiple security domains. Microsoft Sentinel is a cloud-native SIEM with data connectors and a billing model tied to ingestion and Azure services. The right shortlist depends on your telemetry, operating model, automation requirements, and total cost—not a universal ranking.

How do the three platforms differ?

The comparison is clearest when treated as a choice among operating models rather than three equivalent “AI SOC” products. The table summarizes the product scope described in official documentation; it does not establish comparative detection quality or analyst outcomes.

Platform Documented scope and operating patterns AI and automation distinction Cost evidence available
Stellar Cyber Open XDR combines SIEM and NDR functions, centralizes alerts and telemetry, and supports case management and automation. Stellar Cyber describes use as a primary SOC platform, a legacy SIEM replacement, a companion to a retained SIEM, or chiefly for NDR. These are vendor-described capabilities and use cases (Stellar Cyber documentation). In 7.0.x documentation, XDR Standard includes natural-language investigation, AI-generated case analysis, and recommended actions. The separately licensed Autonomous SOC add-on is described as adding automated multi-domain alert investigation, AI-driven verdicts, verdict-aware summaries, analyst override and justification, and learning from feedback. Confirm capabilities and licensing for the quoted release (Stellar Cyber 7.0.x documentation). No comparable public quote-level price is established here. Request a quote scoped to the modules, telemetry, deployment, and support you need.
Darktrace Its ActiveAI Security Platform is presented as spanning cloud, email, network, OT, endpoint, identity, Cyber AI Analyst, exposure management, and services, with integration options for existing security tools (Darktrace product information). Darktrace says its AI learns patterns from an organization’s own business data to identify anomalous activity. This is vendor positioning, not independent validation of detection results. Clarify which investigation, triage, and response actions are included and how they are governed. No comparable public quote-level price is established here. Ask for a scoped commercial proposal that specifies products, data sources, services, and support.
Microsoft Sentinel Microsoft documents Sentinel as a cloud-native SIEM for multicloud and multiplatform environments, with detection, investigation, response, proactive hunting, and data connectors. Sentinel SIEM is available in the Microsoft Defender portal with or without Defender XDR or an E5 license (Microsoft Learn, “What is Microsoft Sentinel?”). Microsoft documents natural-language interaction, query generation, and investigation automation using Security Copilot. Availability, licensing, and the actions that can run automatically should be verified for the planned configuration. Billing depends on data ingestion tier, retention, workspace configuration, and related Azure resources or services. Microsoft documents pay-as-you-go and commitment tiers, with commitment pricing starting at 100 GB/day (Microsoft Sentinel billing documentation).

Microsoft Learn lists “350+ out-of-the-box data connectors.” This is Microsoft’s product-scope figure, accessed October 7, 2026—not a measure of connector depth, integration effort, or detection performance.

Which platform fits your SOC operating model?

Consider Stellar Cyber when you need deployment flexibility

Stellar Cyber’s documented patterns make it relevant if you are deciding whether to replace a legacy SIEM, retain that SIEM while adding Open XDR, use the platform as a primary SOC environment, or focus on network detection and response. Establish which system will be authoritative for alert handling, cases, retention, and response before deciding whether to replace or coexist with existing tools.

Consider Darktrace when its cross-domain scope matches your evaluation

Darktrace presents a broad set of security domains and an approach that models behavior using an organization’s own data. Its product page describes real-time detection and autonomous response, but those descriptions do not show how the platform will perform against your environment. Define which domains and products are in scope, which existing tools it will integrate with, and what “autonomous” means for the specific actions you would enable.

Consider Microsoft Sentinel when a cloud SIEM is the operating center you want

Sentinel’s documented SIEM functions include multicloud and multiplatform data coverage, investigation, response, and proactive hunting. Its presence in the Microsoft Defender portal does not require Defender XDR or an E5 license, according to Microsoft Learn. Evaluate the data sources you need, their ingestion and retention costs, and any related Azure services as part of the same design.

How should you compare telemetry and integrations?

A connector count or a list of supported domains cannot tell you whether the platform will ingest the right events at the right level of detail. Map your current and planned sources before comparing products, then validate each high-priority integration in a pilot.

  • Endpoint and identity: Identify the products and event types that must be available for investigations. Confirm whether the integration provides the context your analysts need, not just an alert feed.
  • Cloud and applications: List cloud environments, key services, and security-relevant applications. Determine whether data arrives through an out-of-the-box connector, an integration, or a custom connector, and who maintains it.
  • Network, email, and OT: Specify the network telemetry, email sources, and operational technology systems in scope. For any required sensors or collectors, confirm deployment prerequisites and where processing and storage occur.
  • Data handling: Ask where raw data, normalized events, alerts, and cases are stored; how long each is retained; and whether data can be routed or placed in a lower-cost tier without losing required analytics.
  • Integration ownership: Assign responsibility for configuration, credentials, upgrades, connector failures, and schema changes. Include that work in the operating-cost estimate.

For each vendor, require a source-by-source mapping that identifies supported event types, ingestion method, expected data volume, storage location, retention options, and any extra product or service dependency. “Supported” should mean the required data is usable in your workflows, not merely that a connector exists.

How do AI assistance, triage, and response differ?

Do not treat an AI summary, an automated investigation, an alert verdict, and an automated response as the same capability. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the exact workflow you intend to deploy, including what the system can do without analyst approval.

  • AI-assisted analysis: Can the tool summarize a case, generate queries, recommend next steps, or let an analyst investigate in natural language? Which of these functions are included in the quoted edition?
  • Automated investigation and triage: Can it gather evidence across domains, classify an alert, or issue a verdict? What evidence is shown, and can analysts inspect the reasoning and correct the result?
  • Response: Which actions can the platform take, against which systems, and under what approval or policy controls? Test whether an action can be paused, reversed, or limited to selected assets.
  • Oversight and feedback: Can analysts override a decision and record why? How is feedback used, and can administrators review changes to workflow behavior?
  • Licensing and defaults: For each capability, establish whether it is included, separately licensed, enabled by default, or dependent on another product or service.

Stellar Cyber’s 7.0.x documentation explicitly separates Standard AI-assisted investigation from the Autonomous SOC add-on’s automated investigation and verdict features; it also describes analyst override and feedback. For Darktrace and Microsoft Sentinel, validate the specific automation, approval controls, and licenses applicable to your proposed configuration rather than inferring them from broad platform descriptions.

How should you assess licensing and total cost?

There is no established, comparable total-cost figure for all three platforms, and no quote-level public pricing for Stellar Cyber or Darktrace in the materials cited here. Avoid ranking them by assumed price. Obtain proposals based on the same scope and model the costs your environment will actually incur.

For Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft’s billing documentation describes pay-as-you-go and commitment tiers; commitment pricing starts at 100 GB/day. That threshold is a billing detail, not a performance benchmark or a prediction of your spend. Ingestion tier, retention, workspace configuration, Azure infrastructure, and some integrations or related services can affect the bill.

Ask each vendor to price an identical workload and state the assumptions in writing:

  • Daily data volume by source, including expected growth and peak periods.
  • Which data is analyzed, retained, or placed in a data lake or other lower-cost storage option, and for how long.
  • Products, modules, connectors, sensors, and response capabilities included in the proposal.
  • Cloud infrastructure, integration, implementation, support, and managed-service charges.
  • License metric, commitment period, overage treatment, and how costs change if ingestion or retention differs from forecast.

Compare the resulting estimates at the same data volume, retention period, service level, and deployment scope. Include the internal effort required to maintain integrations and workflows; a lower license quote alone does not establish a lower operating cost.

What should a buyer test in a pilot?

Official product descriptions establish intended scope, not which platform will produce the best detection or analyst outcomes in a particular environment. A controlled pilot using representative telemetry is the practical way to resolve that question.

  1. Choose representative data: Include the endpoint, identity, cloud, network, email, and application sources that matter to your SOC. Document what is missing and why.
  2. Use consistent scenarios: Run the same agreed investigation and response scenarios across shortlisted platforms. Evaluate both detection and the quality of supporting context.
  3. Measure operational fit: Track alert volume and analyst workload, investigation completeness, time to assemble relevant context, and the effort needed to tune integrations. Use your own acceptance criteria rather than vendor-supplied outcome claims.
  4. Exercise controls: Test approval gates, automatic actions, overrides, justifications, and rollback or containment options. Confirm that permissions and audit records fit your policies.
  5. Observe integration effort: Record connector setup, data gaps, parsing or normalization work, troubleshooting, and the ongoing ownership required.
  6. Reconcile commercial assumptions: Compare pilot data volumes and required retention with vendor quotes. Ask for revised pricing if actual use differs from the assumptions.

How to make the shortlist

Start with the operating model you want, then eliminate platforms that cannot support your required data and workflows within acceptable cost and governance boundaries. Shortlist Stellar Cyber if its replacement, coexistence, primary-platform, or NDR-first patterns align with your plan; Darktrace if its cross-domain product scope and organization-specific behavioral approach merit validation; and Microsoft Sentinel if a cloud-native SIEM with its connector ecosystem and Azure billing model fits your architecture. Treat these as reasons to evaluate—not conclusions about efficacy. Make the final selection against a matched pilot and written, like-for-like commercial proposals.
