Start with the free first-party reports: Google Search Console measures impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, while Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Consider a paid AI search optimization tool only when it fills a specific monitoring or workflow gap—and check how it defines coverage and metrics before treating its numbers as evidence of visibility or ranking.

What AI search optimization tools can—and cannot—tell you

These tools can help monitor whether content appears in generative search experiences, what pages are cited, and how those observations change. Their measures are not interchangeable: an impression, a linked citation, a brand mention, an estimated visibility score, and a conventional search ranking describe different things.

Google’s guidance is that generative search optimization remains part of SEO. As Google puts it, “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Google says pages must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to qualify for generative AI features. It does not require an llms.txt file or special AI markup, and structured data is not a special requirement for these results. Google Search Central: guidance on AI features

That makes third-party measurement a supplement to sound technical SEO and useful, original, people-first content—not proof that buying a tool will earn citations or improve rankings. Google also warns against inauthentic mentions and vendors claiming access to its internal ranking or AI systems.

Google Search Console: impressions from Google’s AI search features

Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It supports views by page, country, date, and device. Google says the report rolled out worldwide to all websites on August 31, 2026. The report excludes Search Labs experiments; the newest data can be preliminary, and standard Search performance report limits and aggregation differences apply. The chart aggregates at property level unless filtered by URL, while the page table groups results by page. Google Search Console Help: Generative AI performance report

Bing Webmaster Tools: citations across supported Microsoft experiences

Microsoft announced the Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report in public preview on February 10, 2026. It covers how site content appears across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and select partner integrations. Measures include total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends. Microsoft cautions that citation totals do not reveal a source’s position in an answer; cited-page counts do not establish ranking, authority, or a page’s role. Microsoft Bing Webmaster Blog: AI Performance announcement

On June 16, 2026, Microsoft announced four additional capabilities in global preview: Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare. They add query-context categories, grouped subject areas, relative citation presence, and comparisons of citation patterns over time. These features help describe context and patterns; they do not turn citation measurement into conventional search-rank data. Microsoft Bing Search Blog: AI Performance preview expansion

Compare candidate tools on the details that matter

What to compare Questions to ask Why it matters
Surface coverage Which exact engines and features are monitored—Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot, Bing summaries, or partner integrations? Are they reported separately or combined? A broad label such as “AI search” can conceal materially different coverage.
Metric definitions Does a figure count impressions, linked citations, cited URLs, grounding queries, brand mentions, estimated visibility, share of voice, or conventional rank? How is it counted, and is it sampled or complete? Different measures answer different questions and should not be compared as if they were the same.
Granularity Can you view results by page, query or prompt context, geography, device, date range, and competitor? Page-level and contextual views can help identify where observed visibility comes from and what to investigate next.
Sampling and coverage limits How often are prompts run? How do location, language, account state, and model affect results? How are unavailable surfaces handled? Are answer text and source URLs retained? These details determine how representative and reproducible a report is. Ask the vendor directly; methods differ and should not be assumed.
Workflow fit Does the product only report observations, or connect them to technical audits, content tasks, team workflows, exports, and reporting? Pay for features that address an actual operational need, not the assumption that software itself causes citations.
Cost and evidence What are the current price, project and prompt caps, seat limits, data-retention rules, export limits, and contract terms? Verify current terms with the vendor. A tool’s price and limits should be weighed against the work it saves or supports.
Fit with official guidance Does the vendor promise guaranteed visibility or privileged access to Google’s internal systems? Google says third-party tools cannot access its internal ranking or AI systems. Treat such promises as a warning and assess advice against Google’s official guidance.

Choose a tool based on the job you need done

  • You need Google-specific performance data: Start with Search Console’s Generative AI performance report and use its page, country, date, and device views to investigate impressions.
  • You need citation observations across Microsoft experiences: Review Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance, bearing in mind its citation and sampling caveats.
  • You need monitoring across more surfaces or a team workflow: A paid product may be worth evaluating if it clearly documents the surfaces, methods, and features you need. Compare its reports with first-party data where available.

Google also provides a Search generative AI control for including or excluding site content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and specified Discover generative AI features. Inclusion is the default unless the property’s control has been changed. Exclusion prevents site content and links from appearing in those features, and Google says a change generally takes a few days to take effect. This is a participation control—not a way to improve measurement or ranking. Google Search Console Help: Search generative AI control
