Luminar Neo uses AI for specific editing jobs—not as one all-purpose “AI edit.” Depending on the task, it can detect and replace a sky, assist with portrait or lighting adjustments, remove distractions, swap an element from a prompt, or extend an image beyond its original frame. You still choose the edit and need to inspect the result; Skylum’s feature descriptions explain intended capabilities, not independently measured quality or speed.
What AI does in Luminar Neo
AI in Luminar Neo is best understood as a set of tools that automate or assist particular stages of editing. Some identify regions such as skies or backgrounds; others work on selected objects, portraits, or lighting. The generative tools create replacement content or extend the canvas. These are distinct operations with different controls, not a single command that reliably finishes an image for you. Skylum’s feature overview lists sky replacement, portrait retouching, background removal, and relighting alongside its generative tools.
The practical trade-off is less manual selection for some tasks, in exchange for needing to judge whether the automated result fits the photograph. Skylum’s own descriptions do not establish comparative quality, speed, or a guarantee of natural-looking results.
Which Luminar AI tool fits the edit?

Replacing a sky with Sky AI
Sky AI analyzes an image to locate the sky boundary. Skylum says it can account for water and add a reflection, and provides built-in and custom sky choices. You can adjust the placement and appearance, with controls described in its support guide for horizon position, reflection amount, blur, warmth, brightness, haze, and grain. Skylum’s Sky AI guide explains the controls and workflow.
Using a custom sky
For optimal performance, Skylum’s guide recommends a JPEG sky image with a short edge of at least 1,200 pixels and a file size under 10 MB. Choose a sky photographed with a plausible replacement in mind: direction, brightness, and atmosphere should make sense alongside the foreground. The tool may be unavailable when too little sky is visible in the source photograph.

Check the horizon, fine edges such as branches, and any water reflections after applying the replacement. A detected boundary or generated reflection still needs to make sense in the context of the actual scene.
How GenErase, GenSwap, and GenExpand differ
GenErase removes a selected distraction
Select the object or area to remove; GenErase fills the selection with generated content. Skylum’s workflow recommends handling one object at a time and covering the full area, then refining the selection if the result is unsatisfactory. That is practical vendor guidance, not an independent finding about success rates. The GenErase feature page describes its intended use.

GenSwap replaces or adds an element from a prompt
GenSwap uses a selection and text prompt to replace or insert an image element. Skylum recommends naming the desired object—for example, “blue sea”—rather than prompting with an action such as “remove” or “change.” Inspect the result for mismatched scale, lighting, edges, and context. Skylum’s GenSwap instructions describe its prompt guidance.
GenExpand extends the frame
GenExpand generates content beyond an image’s existing borders. It is intended for situations where you want more space around a subject or a different composition, rather than to retouch an object already inside the frame. Review the newly created areas for continuity with the original scene.

Review AI edits before sharing or delivery
AI assistance does not remove the need for editorial judgment. Check whether boundaries, reflections, object relationships, and fine details remain credible, especially where generated content meets the original photograph. If the output does not fit, revise the selection or prompt where the tool allows it, or choose a less extensive edit. Skylum notes that generative results can vary; its materials do not establish that every result will be natural or professional.

Skylum’s FAQ lists 8 GB of RAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended, 10 GB of free disk space, and an SSD for best performance. It lists macOS 12 or higher and 64-bit Windows 10 version 1909 or higher, along with processor and graphics requirements. Because operating-system support and hardware requirements can change, check Skylum’s current FAQ against your computer before installing or buying. An SSD is a recommendation for performance, not a stated requirement for using the editor.

Luminar Neo can be used as a standalone application or within supported host-app workflows. Skylum’s FAQ names Lightroom Classic and Photos for macOS in its plugin or extension answer; its Sky AI page also advertises plugin use with Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. Check the live compatibility information for supported host-app versions rather than assuming every version works.
