No available evidence establishes one AI math solver as the best explainer for every learner. Photomath is the clearest documented choice for scanning a problem and viewing worked steps, but “step by step” is not the same as a verified or understandable explanation. Choose by how you enter problems, how much guidance you need, and whether you can check the reasoning.
What makes a math solver explanation useful?
A final answer tells you what the tool produced; a useful explanation lets you follow how it got there. Look for the specific transformation at each step, enough context to understand why it is valid, and a result you can check independently. Hints and tutorials can help in ways that a list of equations may not.
Do not treat a fluent sequence of steps as proof of correctness. A 2021 study introducing the MATH benchmark reported 12,500 challenging competition mathematics problems, each with a full step-by-step solution. Its findings concern mathematical problem solving in that benchmark, not a current head-to-head evaluation of commercial apps. The authors cautioned that scaling language models was not then solving MATH; the study also illustrates why relevant-sounding steps can still contain logical errors. Read the MATH paper.
How the available tools compare
| Tool | What the available documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Photomath | Google’s help documentation describes scanning a problem with a mobile-device camera, then showing step-by-step solutions for topics from arithmetic to calculus. It says core machine-generated steps for equations and expressions are free; Photomath Plus adds animated tutorials, contextual hints, and third-level steps. Photomath Help | Those are vendor descriptions, not an independent accuracy or explanation-quality evaluation. Plan details can change. |
| Microsoft Math Solver | A search-result description advertises step explanations, graphing, practice materials, and language support. Microsoft Math Solver | The page could not be opened for verification, and the search result was crawled roughly 1.3 years before this review. Current availability, pricing, and workflow are not established. |
| Symbolab | Its official homepage identifies it as an online math solver and calculator. Symbolab | The available page content does not establish input methods, subject coverage, plan limits, or explanation depth. |
| Wolfram|Alpha Pro | An official Pro page identifies a paid computational service. Wolfram|Alpha Pro | Current prices and specific step-by-step features were not established by the available page content. |
| Desmos | Desmos is a math and graphing service. Desmos | The available homepage content does not establish specific features for a comparison of solver explanations. |
Which solver fits your task?
For scanning a problem and following worked steps
Photomath has the strongest documented match in this comparison if you want to point a phone camera at a problem and see a sequence of steps. Google describes the scan being sent to cloud servers for neural-network recognition, followed by a problem-solving algorithm that provides solution steps. Its help page says: “Once you scan your problem, we’ll show you how to solve it step-by-step.” This is a product promise, not independent confirmation that every scan or solution is correct.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an online solver or computational work
Symbolab’s homepage presents it as an online math solver and calculator, while Wolfram|Alpha Pro is a paid computational service. The available documentation does not support ranking either one as a better teacher or promising a particular level of explanation. Check each service’s current feature and plan details for the problem you intend to solve.
For graph-focused work
Desmos is relevant when graphing is central to the task, but the available page content does not verify a particular feature or make it a substitute for a step-by-step solver. Microsoft Math Solver’s search listing also mentions graphing, practice materials, and language support; because that listing is stale and the page could not be verified, confirm current availability before relying on it.

How to check a solver’s reasoning
Use the solution as something to inspect, not as an authority. For a worked solution, check that each change follows from the line before it and that the final result meets the original problem’s conditions.
- Check transformations: Look for operations applied consistently to both sides and algebraic steps that preserve equality.
- Check restrictions: Substitution, division, square roots, logarithms, and other operations can introduce or exclude values. Confirm domain conditions and test proposed solutions in the original expression or equation.
- Check the final result: Substitute an answer where possible; for numerical or applied problems, verify units and whether the result is plausible.
- Notice missing reasoning: A jump from one expression to another may be mathematically valid but unhelpful if you cannot explain why it works. Ask for a hint or consult another source rather than copying steps you do not understand.
How to make a fair comparison yourself
No reliable, current, named statistic in the available evidence compares explanation quality across these commercial tools. If you are choosing between services, compare them on the same representative problems rather than relying on a product label.

- Choose problems you actually need help with, including a familiar exercise and one that tests a likely weak point.
- Enter the same problem in each tool, noting whether you typed it, scanned it, or used another supported input method.
- Record whether the tool understood the problem, displayed intermediate steps, explained the key transformations, and produced a correct result.
- Check whether a useful hint or explanation is available without payment. The documented free-versus-paid distinction here applies to Photomath, not automatically to other services.
- Keep the test date and plan tier with your notes, since product features and access can change.
What to choose
For a camera-first workflow with documented worked steps, start with Photomath. For computational solving or graphing, consider the service whose current verified features match that job—but do not infer teaching quality from a solver or graphing label. In every case, judge the explanation by whether you can follow and verify it, not by how confidently it is presented.
