Use AI to help write and inspect website tests, but keep a real browser test runner—such as Playwright—in charge of executing them. Record or scaffold a test for a high-value user journey, review its steps and assertions against the requirement, run it across the browsers you support, and inspect traces when it fails. AI can accelerate test authoring; it does not establish that a test is correct or that a site is accessible.

What AI does in website QA—and what it does not

AI can help turn a plain-language requirement or browser interaction into a first draft of a test. It can also help inspect a live page and adapt code to a project’s conventions. A browser automation framework still performs the actions, waits for elements, checks assertions, and supplies evidence about failures. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, with language bindings for TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java. Its test-runner features include auto-waiting, retrying assertions, isolated contexts, parallel execution, and traces.

Keep the distinction clear: framework features make browser tests executable and diagnosable; they do not prove an AI-generated scenario expresses the right business rule. Review generated steps, locators, test data, and expected outcomes before treating a draft as a regression test. The official documentation describes capabilities and recommended workflows, but does not establish a universal accuracy rate or quantified time savings for AI-generated tests.

A practical workflow for automating QA with AI

  1. Choose a test runner and a user outcome. Pick a journey with a clear expected result, such as submitting a form, signing in, or completing a purchase. Decide which browsers matter to your users; Playwright can run the same automation approach against Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit.
  2. Record or ask AI to scaffold the first draft. Playwright Codegen opens the site and records browser interactions as starter test code. It can generate assertions for visibility, text, and values. In an AI-assisted workflow, a live browser and Playwright MCP can be paired with natural-language instructions, project conventions, and Codegen. Treat the result as a draft, not as a verified test.
  3. Compare every action and assertion with the requirement. Remove steps that do not belong to the intended journey. Make assertions check the acceptance criteria—for example, that a success message appears after a valid submission—rather than merely confirming that a click occurred.
  4. Use locators that describe the interface. Prefer semantic locators such as role, label, placeholder, or visible text where they fit. Use test IDs when they are an intentional part of the project’s testing contract. Avoid selectors that depend unnecessarily on fragile page structure.
  5. Run the test in the target browsers and inspect failures. Determine whether the application regressed, the test expectation is wrong, or the environment caused the failure. Playwright traces can include a timeline, DOM snapshots, network requests, console logs, and screenshots to help with that diagnosis.
  6. Add accessibility checks without treating them as a verdict. Playwright’s accessibility guidance shows how to integrate axe-core and scope scans to relevant page regions. Automated rules can identify some issues, including contrast problems, missing accessible labels, and duplicate IDs. They cannot catch every accessibility problem; pair them with manual assessment and inclusive user testing.
  7. Review and commit the test. Have a reviewer confirm the test’s purpose, assertions, data, and maintainability before it becomes part of the suite. Keep it executable in the team’s normal workflow and project conventions.

How to create a starter test with Playwright Codegen

Codegen is useful when you want a concrete first draft from a browser journey. It records interactions and can produce locator and assertion code; it does not decide whether the journey represents the right requirement. Install Playwright in the project and use its Codegen command to open the target page:

npx playwright codegen https://example.com

Replace https://example.com with the page you need to test. In the opened browser, perform the journey once. Inspect the generated output, then move the relevant steps into a maintained test file and replace incidental actions with explicit checks against acceptance criteria. For setup details and current command options, consult the Playwright Codegen documentation.

A generated test should answer three questions clearly: what user outcome is being checked, which visible behavior proves it happened, and what failure would mean. If the test only repeats recorded clicks without checking an outcome, it is not yet a useful regression check.

Choosing an AI-assisted QA workflow

Decision What to evaluate
Test artifact Prefer generated code the team can read, review, run, and maintain. The documented Playwright workflow generates code; the sources here do not rank commercial alternatives.
Browser and language coverage Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, plus TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java support.
Locator strategy Check whether generated locators use meaningful roles, labels, placeholders, text, or deliberate test IDs instead of brittle assumptions about page structure.
Failure diagnosis Look for evidence that helps distinguish a product defect from a faulty expectation or an environment issue. Playwright traces can show DOM, network, console, and screenshot context.
Accessibility scope Know which automated rules run, what page state they inspect, and how manual assessment and inclusive user testing will cover issues automation cannot detect.
Review and pipeline fit Generated tests should be reviewable, executable in the team’s pipeline, and consistent with its test-data and maintenance conventions.

What automated accessibility checks can and cannot tell you

An axe-core scan can flag certain automatically detectable problems, such as low contrast, missing accessible labels, and duplicate IDs. A clean scan is not proof that a page is accessible or conforms to WCAG: many accessibility problems require people to assess the experience directly. Playwright’s accessibility guidance explicitly warns that many problems can only be discovered through manual testing. Combine automated scans with manual assessment and inclusive testing with users.

Troubleshooting generated browser tests

The test passes, but it does not verify the requirement

Recorded interactions can capture what happened without proving the expected result. Add an assertion for the relevant outcome, then check that the expected text, state, or value corresponds to the acceptance criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The test fails intermittently

Inspect the trace and determine whether the page was still loading, the locator was ambiguous, the application behavior changed, or the test data or environment varied. Prefer Playwright’s actionable semantic locators and retrying assertions over fixed timing assumptions where possible; use a wait condition that matches the state the test actually needs.

The locator breaks after a layout change

Replace selectors tied to incidental DOM structure with locators based on the control’s role, accessible name, label, or visible text. Use a test ID where it is deliberately maintained as a stable testing interface.

An AI-generated assertion checks the wrong thing

Trace each assertion back to a stated requirement and review the test data and expected outcome. A syntactically valid test can still encode the wrong business rule; do not accept it without running it and examining what it checks.

An accessibility scan reports no problems

Continue with manual assessment and inclusive user testing. Automated checks cover only detectable rules and cannot establish that every user can use the page.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Playwright’s documented support for parallel execution and isolated browser contexts can help teams structure suites and run tests concurrently. Actual runtime and infrastructure cost depend on the suite, browsers, environments, and CI setup; the cited documentation does not establish a universal savings or speed figure for AI-assisted QA. Use traces to reduce time spent guessing at a failure, and keep generated tests focused on meaningful outcomes so the suite remains understandable and maintainable.
